Quite simple. OpenGFX is GPL'ed so we expect you to follow everything outlined by the GPL (version 2) license. We cannot require you to do more than that.

In principle that means that your PHP game needs to be GPL as well. There are some constructions possible where you seperate the graphics from the acual game which allow you to license the game files differently while keeping the OpenGFX files GPL'ed. Those constructions are rather tricky though and I wouldn't recommend them unless you know exactly what you're doing...

Apart from that a link to OpenGFX and OpenTTD on your games website would be nice :D

I don't think we can dual license OpenGFX both GPL and some CC license. There are a lot of people involved who'd need to agree to that; some of which inactive and possibly unreachable. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate!

in the case of a website, using some of your artworks. What is your point of view about "scope of linkage" and "derivated work".
I would be happy if you clearly expose me what are your expectations.
That sounds to me like an online game. In the case that you use the OpenGFX graphics in a project of yours, we expect, that you
a) mention the origin of the graphics
b) mention the names of the creators (of those whose graphics you use - if that's too much work, take the whole list)
c) mention and make available the license in its entirety
d) make your project GPL, too, e.g the whole sources available upon request in form in which you prefer to work on them.

In my imagination this can be achieved e.g. by links labeled credits, license and download (or your project), showing on the home page / entry page of that project.

EDIT: FooBar was quicker :-)

This is great idea.
The point of open source is sharing existing resources. I read some (or all?) graphics are made with Blender. Are these work files downloadable in one place?

The amount of sprites created with blender is approximately 0.2% and were taken from the 32bpp project, so check there. All we used as source are renderings at display in the 32bpp topics, not the blender files. I'm unaware of a central location of blender files. The OpenGFX repository on the other hand is located at https://dev.openttdcoop.org/projects/opengfx.

Some of the graphics were originally 32bpp 2D graphics (before being converted to the TTD 8bpp palette), mostly ones drawn by me. If you have any specific requests the I may be able to provide you with a 32bpp version. Unfortunately there is nowhere central to get hold of these online... Send me a private message with any specific requests.

Those would belong to the source, we don't care to waste a bit repo space. :-) So if you want, you could push those to the official OpenGFX Repository. Maybe you create a own subfolder for in sprites/source. Join #openttdcoop.devzone to discuss it further.

We're happy to announce that we release today version 0.1.1 of the free base graphics OpenGFX.

You can obtain them from the usual download locations, bananas and http://bundles.openttdcoop.org/opengfx/releases/ At the latter location also the source is now available for those without mercurial as a stand alone tar ball.

EDIT: bananas doesn't work yet as I bananas doesn't let me update OpenGFX...

There was some progress in the toyland and some important fixes, especially to the GRFID which avoids crashes in certain situations:

- Feature: Headquarters for toyland climate
- Feature: Toffee wagon in toyland
- Feature: Candyfloss wagon in toyland
- Feature: Sugar wagon in toyland
- Feature: Toyland company statue
- Feature: New intro title font

- Fix: Alignment of construction phase of temperate office building
- Fix: GrfID must start with FF
- Fix: Remove action colours from toyland statue
- Fix: Airport runway misalignment
- Fix: Random bits of rivers.

- Change: Create the install directory, if it doesn't exist
- Change: Convert all text files to utf-8 and unix-style line endings
- Change: Improved graphics for toyland foundations

- Doc: update author overview html output script for 0.2.0 targets

Enjoy!

As of today OpenGFX celebrates its first birthday.

For a year now, OpenGFX is available from this place or via a publicly accessible repository at the #openttdcoop DevZone. It made progress from an early alpha version with quite a bit of missing sprites to version 0.1.1 as of today. Even more bleeding edge nightlies are produced every day at 18:18h CE(S)T and found on the download page of the DevZone.

Still, even though a long way was covered in the last twelve months, a bit of the road to go remains. Contributors (maybe you?!) are warmly welcome. OpenGFX offers you the chance to become one of the artists whose work will be used and seen by (nearly) every person playing OpenTTD.

Currently we're looking for sprites resembling the African manager faces. Having that will allow to play OpenTTD with a full set of graphics in all climates but toyland. Toyland, sadly, is still in need of a few more sprites, even though it is much nicer (IMO) in OpenGFX than it is with the original graphics. It still looks for one or more artists willing to take on a few industries.

Visit the projects site on the DevZone in order to see the current developments, status and the needs in detail. A list of needed sprites is also available.

Is it just me, or is there no TAR file in the latest ZIP download of OpenGFX?

Depends upon what you define as "latest". If you talk about the nightlies: yes, they don't have a tar anymore, but it will extract into a dir opengfx-nightly.

Thanks. Thought I was going mad. So the installation instructions need to be updated, since it says "No need to extract the TAR file, leave it as it is". So do I just dump the resulting folder into /data?

Right, thanks for that report. Yes, it should work by just unzipping it into /data

That brings me to an interesting question. Why was it in the tar in the first place, when the original_windows graphics are not?

Why not? We can. It's one easy file and nothing can get lost. And no one is easily tempted to distribute it w/o license file.

Wow. You're so close. Amazing. So after the African manager face sprites and the Toyland sprites that's it? You don't need the original GFX files? Its really all GDPL. Wow! And then perhaps we get a new stable release of OpenTTD and it all falls into place.

You guys are incredible.

Not even that now... Just the female African manager faces, which me and Ben_Robbins_ are working on :D

Re: [OTTD] OpenGFX 0.2.0 released

Post by planetmaker » 10 Dec 2009 22:32

As of today OpenGFX 0.2.0 is officially released.

It's the first version of this base set which features a complete set of all necessary sprites, thus it is fully functional and nicely playable. You can obtain it from the usual download locations, that is from either bananas or the devzone at http://bundles.openttdcoop.org/opengfx/releases (soon after I posted this)

At this point I'd like to thank all people who contributed to this set and made it become reality, you all did a very good job! A special thanks goes in my opinion towards Zephyris who drew an amazing amount of sprites throughout the two years of development so far (it's not a direct measure for the sprite count, but the authors table counts 257 entries related to him at least partially out of 399 in total) and who also took it into his hands to come up with the last missing sprites and speed up the process to this full release.

Work of course will continue in the quest to improve this set and make it better and better.

For now: enjoy!
