A visualisation of OpenTTD's history

Post by orudge »

I got an e-mail today from Darkvater, who most of you will remember as being a long-time developer here. He's created a little video showcasing OpenTTD's development history in visualisation form. Download it here and let us know what you think. :)

So, what software and codec is required to watch this avi? I've tried winamp, realplayer, quicktime and windows media player, and none of them can make anything of it!? (Win XP sp2)

VideoLAN can open it OK, and it's freeware.
I'll have a look and see if I can find a link for it, otherwise a google search should find it no probs.

In such cases, you should download G-Spot (the software, not the bundle of nerves) and open the .avi file with it. It will display the correct codec name, and you can download it.

VLC worked good for me.

Amazing video, it gives some perspective to how much work there is behind ottd.

Grab ffdshow (google it), and that'll let you play it with WMP and other DirectShow apps. Alternatively, use VLC as others have suggested.

I did consider transcoding it to Flash video and setting up a player for it, but the video's not too big, so downloading it isn't all that impractical.

Really nice!

One thing that would have been handy is to have the legend of the colors visible on the left (or right) for at least say one minute so one have time to get what colors are what. I think having a permanent legend would not hurt that much.

But needless to say I'm very impressed by the video!

Hehe, starts at 0.3.4. The first version of openTTD I recall trying out back in the day, but I guess it's a bit of a coincidence.

It's very neat, and kinda scary to realize that I remember when all those features were implemented.

Can't believe it's already been over four years already.

ffdshow doesn't work for me. (The codec doesn't get registered.) Fortunately, I know exactly enough about AVI to turn it into an XviD file, at which point it proceeded to play properly.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Well, the old SVN repository crashed, so we lost the revision history from before r975 of the old SVN, which I guess coincided somewhat with 0.3.4. ;)

I really really liked that video :)
Next time, i'll try it with a little floydian music ;)

It made me realized how much the game evolved over time.
And how many people contributed to it!

Thanks a lot for this gem, both of you

I think this video should be referenced in the "credits" section of OpenTTD, as it gives you the best impression of all the contributions to OpenTTD.

However, I do miss "michi_cc" in this video, who is the author of "YAPP". Is this due to the fact that michi_cc never was an official OpenTTD developer and therefore never made any trunk commits?

It is automatic visualisation of branches and commits, so you are correct.

At the time it was made, maybe.
But since then, michi_cc has become a valid dev, and has commited at least 3 times.
