The Great UK Meet of 2008

Post by andel »

Dear all (and Ameecher),

It has fallen to my poor little fingers to fing like never before in order to produce a meet for 2008. Once again, I shall be providing the means to the end when we shall all meet and be merry... or many - or both! Or, in Ameecher's case - Mary!...

London is the destination for this year, and activities planned for this one. On the 9th August 2008, we shall descend or ascend to Leicester Square, London from 11:00 approx onwards. The Game (Copyright Andel) will take place at approx 2PM.

Conditions apply. See packs for details. All calls cost £20000 per second and all profits go to my pockets.

Cheers kids.

Peace.

If you're coming to the meet, or think you'll be attending the meet, please sign your name on this wiki page. If you're registered on the wiki and logged in, just use "~~~~" to sign.

Small print does apply:
Under 16s need to ensure parental permission and must ensure they phone Mum and Dad when they arrive, half way through and on the way home. Foreign visitors welcome provided they buy Andel a beer. No one will be accommodated by organisers nor can we accept responsibility for missed trains, missed planes and mislaid laptops. We have no insurance for any thing that gets mislead nor accidents caused by tomfoolery (or DaveWorley) as it is an informal gathering at present. There will be no alcohol or food provided and it is recommended you bring cash with you for food and drink. Terms and conditions can be amended at any time. Telephone numbers for the organisation team will be available on the day. If anyone pushes Born_Acorn off the side of the Gherkin, make sure Andel is not a witness as then it becomes SEP - namely, Natasha's.

Boring stuff:
This is all essential. Please read this. It is important not just for the Forums but for you as well. Please understand and make note of the following; a quiz will be at the end.

Introducing the team:
The team will be introduced and outlined in the first document that is aimed to be produced by the end of April 2008.

Location:
London is the capital city of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Subsequently, it has a Underground Tube system and Buses that cost money. Most travel operators will sell you a travel card with your train ticket - this can sometimes work out more cost-effective than paying seperate fares. Hotels are abundant but can cost an awful lot - we recommend travel lodge, Novotel or Holiday Inn Express.

Getting there is easy - ECML, SWT, WCML (LM/VTWC), GWML, GEML etc - all tracks lead to London in one way or another. Be aware that some operators may charge less for advance booked tickets... please also note that engineering works can often crop up on weekends - take note of these in advance.

Travel around London
With part of the day involving some form of travel, we recommend you budget for a Travel Card allowing travel on Buses, Tube and Trains* within Zones 1-3. This is to ensure you do not over-spend on the day. Please remember to wear suitable attire for travelling - a thick jumper may be warm on a cool bus but may not be suitable on the tube. Please also see notes in the food section. If you travel in London more than 5 times a year, why not consider a PAYG Oyster Card?

Food and drink in London
Food can cost money. Please ensure you budget for food and drink. If using the tube please remember that in the summer it can get hot underground. It is strongly recommended that you carry a bottle of water on you at all times. Please observe travel operators regulations on food. On NO ACCOUNT will under 18s be allowed to consume alcohol. If at any point we choose to enter an establishment that retails Alcohol (including cafés), any attempts to purchase it will result in your being asked to leave the meet. This is a serious issue and we will enforce it rigirously.

Identify yourself
Please remember that London is a constant security watch zone. Please try to keep a piece of identification about yourself, especially if you look as dodgy as Born_Acorn.

Safety and Security
On the day, we will aim to have name stickers for all members attending. Please note that if you have said you will not be coming and then turn up, you may not have a badge. This leads us nicely to a sticky situation. Ultimately, we will not turn you away without good reason but please be understanding that security and safety of the group is paramount. We will not hesitate to take actions to ensure this. Again, if you are acting in a manner that might endanger the safety and/or security of the group, we will have to act accordingly. Please respect that any requests made by members of the TT-F Meet Committee (identifiable on the day by notes on any name tags) at all times.

Over Night Accommodation
There are a number of over night accommodation points in form of hotels, B+Bs and Youth Hostels. Please note that TT-F will not accommodate nor finance any accommodation of any members. It is your responsibility to ensure you are safely housed at the end of any day. Google can help you find such places. Foreign visitors are welcome provided they have such accommodation or are leaving straight after to a trainyPorty, hairyporto or shippydocka.

Final disclaimer
By no means are we responsible for any weather, acts of God or Gods, conditions outside of our control, yourself or your belongings - in effect "force majeur". Or whatever its called. We cannot and will not take any form of responsibility beyond providing activities and locations for this meet.

I might come actually, if I have the money to do so since I also plan to move out around that time and that will be a big money drain :(. But if I manage to spare some money I'll surely come!

Plans, as last years, will be public enough and we'll have two way radios and stuff too... Dave particularly enjoyed asking me of my location last year.

There will be some fun activities planed, including "I'm sorry I haven't the tube" and "Bus ado about nothing".

Too bad I'm short on cash now, so most time of the vacation I think I'll be working. However I will vote if I know for sure I can come. :o

if it's in August I can probably come, depending on when my school starts again.
if it's in July, it depends on when my internship ends...

I'd like to come, though.
I'll need to find a place to stay, but I hear London has plenty of bridges to sleep under.

After talking to the parents, me coming would be possible if I can fund it myself. Also, as it's not possible to change your vote..:

I voted for August 23rd (well, the latest date, not sure if it was 23) but would rather go for the end of July.

God's sake. Let me see... Any one got an idea of the engineering schedule for the GEML?
Most of August looks ok so we'll plump for the 2nd. Should be able to make it this time round :D

Note to some people who are in possesion of a Young Person's railcard. If you apply for an oyster card you can get 1/3 off tube and bus fares too. Worth having, I'm sure you'll agree.
