My personal graphics trial - Volvo B10 3-axles (Wright Body)

Post by denwong »

I was a long time reader of this board, and I greatly appreciate all the fantastic works of various artists. However being borned in Hong Kong, I feel that it is a pity that the buses in my hometown can never appear in the game. They are mostly 3-axles versions of the European buses like Volvo B9 and Dennis Tridents, that you might find quite familiar with, but their extended length enables them to easily handle any demand in busy cities like Hong Kong.

Therefore instead of waiting for somebody to draw for me, why can't I draw them myself? I am probably the only one who is interested in Hong Kong buses here, so basically as long as I accept my own standard of drawing it's fine.

So I tried to draw this one after looking at how Pikka's bus set are drawn. (the graphics are for my own fun only.... but if I am posting them in PNG format like this do I need to ask for permissions first....? if yes please let me know and I'll delete it)

I think the / side does not look too bad, but the - view is just horrible. I tried very hard to draw the cruved front in the side view but it just does not look like the real thing.

Therefore... I am kindly seeking advices from great artists here. Of coz comments from others are always welcomed, no matter positive or negative.

Thanks in advance.

-Edit-

In fact I had completed the sprites already, managed to code it myself and put it in to play smoothly. I still can't draw the - views properly, but I'll just accept it.

Attached is a screenshot of a game. As this is kind of finished for myself, I'll try not to raise attention, thus not replying to this thread. This picture is just for those who happens to be still interested, and managed to find out this slight update.

-Edit-
Attachment removed....

There's something seriously wrong with the size of the bus; it's way too big. It looks like you inflated a sprite x times, and then started pixel-painting on it. Try the pixel painting without inflating the sprite first. I do believe you got some talent. So, keep on trying, but stick to the correct size.

I think he's made it larger for preview purposes, as Pikka does.

I think he just took the image from the HOVS thread (which is double sized) and painted over it.

He didn't. If you zoom in some pixels are not double sized.

Aye, that explains. Hmm... tho, he should've noticed the pixels all were double sized...

in fact that was what I did
originally I was trying to extract a PCX from a GRF, but I think I've lost my GRFWizard.. so I just downloaded that GIF and draw on it wihtout noticing it is double sized

that explains why drawing details are so easy... I was thinking... hmm actually TTD sprites are not too small to draw. But well :(

I'll try to redraw it later today or tmr then. I hope I'll still find it ok after all the sprites are half-sized.

did you actually ask pikka's permission to retouvh his sprites?
The occasional look back at your past can teach you a great many things...

The thing is, I am not going to publish this as a set, a GRF or anything - this is simply for myself. You might argue that I put a PNG file here - I am not sure if this is ok, but I had stated in the original post that if this is not even permitted I'll delete it immediately.

Anyway as I made such an obvious and horrible mistake, I had chosen to delete the file to avoid any further arguements on a "sprite" which actually is completely unusable.

If this is simply for yourself you shouldn't post it on the forum. If you want to share it with other people always ask permission prior to uploading the file (image, code, whatever).

The fact that I've already posted in this thread without complaining would seem to suggest that I'm okay with it.

Here I apologize if I should not have posted it according to Hyronymus. Thank you Pikka for not blaming me as well, as you have the right to do so. Your sprites actually teach me a lot.

What I meant to say is that I don't see the logic in posting something on a community forum if all you want is keep it to yourself. That was the contradiction I tried to point out. Regardless of that everyone should ask permission for releasing (edited) files containing someone else's work.
