Dont know if id call it a newbie rule, but if you check the cargo payment rates, coal is by far the best to start with, especially with slow vehicles as it doesnt lose that much value over the course of a long/slow trip.
Moving coal is a very good start to any game. It's not a rule, though, especially if there's better cargo... unless you're a newbie, and have been told that starting with coal is good. Then it's a newbie rule, because new players often become so fixated on starting with coal that other cargos get totally overlooked - as was the case here, where the same route served the most incredible wood gift I've ever seen from a random game.
Serotonin, to his credit, immediately took advantage of the wood when it was pointed out. He just hadn't noticed it.
These shots are primarily to show off the coolness of peter1138's newly committed support for new stations, and also a bit of the new elrails with UKRS - and I have here five posts to show them off!

I hooked up my accelerator to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.
Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you take the wall with you. Spoilers and bodykits are how much of the wall you take with you. Rollcages and windownets are how much of a mess you leave on the wall.
Here's another well supplied coal power station - t was built by a friend of mine at a LAN party - he'se not very good at planning, so it sort of grew malevolently rather than in any planned or rational sense. The bridging is quite impressive to service every platform
