Ah, TTDPatch, you posted in OpenTTD, the wrong forum. No problem, as long as you're not gonna create a new one in that forum. A moderator will most probably move this into the right forum.
Anyways, for TTDPatch I suggest you read some tutorials, which can be found in this topic, alternatively you can read the manual of the Patch.

yes, TTDPatch is an exe hack adding new features, its a "Patch"
OpenTTD is a full new re-write of the game, adding more new features, many of them different from TTDPatch.
for adding new graphics, Patch is the way to go. please try not to confuse the 2 in the future, and good luck

ObPeeve: OpenTTD is not a rewrite; it's a translation of the disassembly into C.bobingabout wrote:OpenTTD is a full new re-write of the game,
Different often meaning "broken", "nonexistant", or "not configurable". It also often means "useful", "time-saving", or "impossible in TTDPatch", though.bobingabout wrote:adding more new features, many of them different from TTDPatch.
Neither program is better than the other.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

was originally, but even most of that has changed.DaleStan wrote:ObPeeve: OpenTTD is not a rewrite; it's a translation of the disassembly into C.bobingabout wrote:OpenTTD is a full new re-write of the game,
and translation didn't simply require running it through a decompilet to C program, it had to be interpretated and re-written, so, its more of a re-write than a translation, because even most of the translated code has been changed or optimised.
you could say that. just because something is in the patch, doesn't mean its in openttd, and if it is, it doesn't mean its the same. and yes, openttd does offer some things not possable for the patch to offer, such as internet games and big maps. really big maps.DaleStan wrote:Different often meaning "broken", "nonexistant", or "not configurable". I wouldn't say that. It doesn't matter much which language you write a feature in, C or Asm, it'll take roughly the same time.bobingabout wrote:note, lot of work. lot more work than OTTD required.
Bigger maps took an awful amount of work in OTTD too. Same with the newgrf support and PBS, it's not any easier to write it in C for OTTD than it was to write in Asm for the Patch. It's taken just as long, if not longer.
And you say that why? Because you have no clue at all? Or is there another, deeper reason...Killer 11 wrote:And it's stability would be questionable too.
Hahah. I like this topic. Excellent post Patchman, thanks for dispelling some of those myths that have been running around that certain OTTD'ers like to cling to.

after using both asm(motarola 68k, PIC1684/873/874/876/877 and looking into Yuri's Revenge Patching) and programming several things in C, not to mention several versions of Basic, and PASCAL. i can definitly say C is a lot easier to work with(even than Basic and PASCAL, even though the starter program in C takes a dozen lines, and in Basic takes only 1), and quicker.Patchman wrote:I wouldn't say that. I'd have to agree that the stability would also be questionable, but, its just a case of bug-fixing. took PD 13 versions (v1.06Beta), and several test betas along the way before he finally got a stable patch for YR.Bigger maps took an awful amount of work in OTTD too. Same with the newgrf support and PBS, it's not any easier to write it in C for OTTD than it was to write in Asm for the Patch. It's taken just as long, if not longer.
plus, patching isn't just writing asm, you've got to write in routines for things that the code wasn't designed to do, which means you risk upsetting the addresses. but i'm sure since you've been doing this for so long, its the least of your worries. And you say that why? Because you have no clue at all? Or is there another, deeper reason...Killer 11 wrote:And it's stability would be questionable too.
PD is doing a great job at patching Yuri's Revenge, but he could sure do with some help. he really hates crackerz(you know, the people who make no-CD patches) he says its "a waste of tallent".
i have no doubt that if you did it, it would be stable eventually.
