It's easy to make your own scenario to learn the game.
Click on the right earth globe to start the editor.
Then you can click on advanced, to change the game to your wishes, but this is not necessary.
If you do not so,
Choose a region and click bottom right.
Change what you want and put off the A.I.
Take the highest loan for 5% interest.
Save the game with it's own name under beginner.
After saving you find your scenario under the left globe "start new game"
under beginner.
Start with a single train line with coal , iron or oil.
After you have build 3 or 4 trains, pay of your debts.
Then you will survive.

You need to install this set: http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?t=11476

And then this mod, earth slopes:

Put everything in your objdata folder/map

It's always a good idea to download and install all possible trainsets, you never know when they are needed

*sigh*

Neither of these saved games should require addons, but include pretty advanced (if inefficient, as I was still learning) layouts.

Everything I've ever made after this used at least some addons, and thus wouldn't work.
