Is there any way to change the Region? I only want to change the side of road traffic from left (England) to right (Alpine). I tried to deselect every object but I can't deselect the grass because it's in use.

Whilst I cannot imagine why you would want anything other than England's green and pleasant land I think it is possible.

Timmy Brolin's Mapgen tool allows selection of Alpine, British or American region and Desert, Rock or Grass scenery. I used British + Grass, whereas Alpine + Grass would probably give what you want.

The files are at home so I will regenerate the map this evening.

How do you get such excellent maps? Are they manually built or is there a secret way?

No secret, explanation can be found here: http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?t=15524

More info on Mapgen here: http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?t=10713

After a bit more experience (about a week) I find it's worth spending some time getting the height levels right. Mapgen works on about 7 shades per level so I have created custom shader palettes in Global Mapper which reflect this (25m, 100m, 250m). Note: Global Mapper does not include water depths so you'll have a flat sea bottom. I created some additional depth with a bit of jiggery pokery in Powerpoint.

However, getting the basic map is the quick part - this one took about an hour - tidying up, adding rivers, etc. takes more time. It has taken me around 6 hours to finish my NL map (add dykes, smooth cliffs from river edges, etc - Slartibartfast in reverse) and I am about to start adding towns and industries. When finished I guess it will have taken about 10 hours in total.

Regenerated map attached. As I thought selecting Alpine region caused vehicles to drive on the right (at least the bus I tested did).

Damn... now I have to do the rivers again

Road Vehicles driving on the left side is a bit dumb for a mostly european map, isn't it? Oh, If I could only change the driving direction... Nothing more, nothing less.

Again, great map.

Hypothesis1: it's such little touches of home that make my exile on the Continent bearable.

Hypothesis2: I didn't think of it until you mentioned it.

Solution: I wonder if there's a way of editing the region DATs.

If the map creators can create maps, then there's propably a way to de-compile the map, right?

Editing Region dat's is done by locotool. As I've done it already ;)

North Sea map

Post by Severous »

Hi

Ive been looking for a map that will meet the needs of a scenario/mini campaign that I am cooking up. Not found one yet. Anyone seen one or prepared to craft one for me?
Dont worry about industries ive got definate plans for them.

Requirement:
- Western edge. Great Yarmounth England with room for a few industries right by the port.
- North Sea..lots of sea.
- Denmark..detail not too important...its being able to sail around it thats key.
- Baltic...well at least the bit I need to sail ships to Kiel/Rostock in Northern Germany (Eastern edge of map.) Room for some industry there.

North and Sourthern edge details are not so important. Can go North to Scandanavia or South into northern europe as you fancy as long as Ensure the Danish land mass is in the way but navigable between Gt Yarmouth and Kiel/Rostock.

If someone is having a go for me can they say so. So I can stop my search and so I dont inconvience too many map makers.

Many thanks in advance if you can assist.

my first map attempt

Post by Severous »

I downloaded the map generator and tried it on the picture DJC posted. Had to fiddle with it in MSPaintbrush to get it the right size.

It worked. I got a recognizable map to play on. :)

Its just that I now need a ship that can sail through rock hard pack ice thats higher than the map

A few more hours downloading global sat files my computer cannot read ...no good.

Then google sat images which whilst got me closer to the end result have copyright protection that wont allow me to use them.

Anyone got a 384x384 greyscale bmp of the area im after ? Please.

Here you are. Contours are at 50m (up to 500m which is why Norway looks a bit flat), region is alpine and projection is mercator (minimises sea!).

Thank you very much. Thats exactly what I wanted and your fast response gives me something to work on today. :D

Those islands to the east of Denmark will mean only sea captains/navigators who know waypoints should apply for jobs on the route I have in mind.
