Vehicles moving around corner still need to be improved !

Post by Aquamarine »

I really like the animation of vehicles when turning around corners be more smooth or say true to life. Will that be possible in future or later released version ?

The problem is that there are not enough graphics. Every vehicle would need another 16 graphics for another step in-between. This is not likely to happen, because it will require much more work of the artists for vehicles shown only for a very short time.

Its one of the major reasons i cannot bother to try Simutrans, turning around corner looks to ugly. also the landscape isn't to good either.

Simutrans should use 3D models to render images for their trains, that way your artists do not need to do so much work for each train.

Then you certainly also don't play TTD ... But the main promblem is, that the project was started ages ago. Nowadays, for 128 size, the models are rendered. We could have more angles for 128 size. But for the small sizes like 64 pixel rendering does not work. The results are simply too ugly and hand drawn pixel looks much better. At least we got the models, so maybe, one day, when computers get much faster and have more memory ...

TTD is 10 years older than Simutrans, and the turning is no way as ugly as Simutrans's.
One thing for shure, Simutrans needs new landscape, atm its quite ugly.

New landscape would mean you have to redraw all landscape-related sprites... that's pretty much work

This isn't true. TTD was made 1994 or so, I started Simutrans in 1997.
There are a few years in between, but not 10.

But Simutrans is still being developed, meaning you totally missed the point Hajo.
TTD however officially isn't still being developed.
Thus TTD is 10 years older than Simutrans atm.

Yabbut TTDPatch/OTTD are still being developed.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Perhaps you should wait for the german set, which has hundred of new houses, and industries, all of them rendered. On a screen near to you soon. (Internal test has just begun.)

And internal we discussed also going 3D. However, this is more a complete display engine rewrite, so it will not happen soon. Ultimately, this could give much smoother landscapes. On todays graphic boards it may be even faster.

However, many buildings are far to complex. E.g. the new steel work took some hours to render in one view, making it really not useful for the game. 3D - in the moment - would take out the easy chance to contribute for almost everyone. (I really like the possibility that everyone can make his vehicle without any coding or what else.)
