OpenTTD Multiplayer

Post by beneyre04 »

OTTD Multiplayer, uses TCP so i understand, which uses packets, to transfer the data between the 2 computers, and if there is a packet mis-match, then it causes a network desync error... So if i understand this correctly, then prehaps one could code, a packet checking and correction system, to make sure the network never desyncs, tho i am not a coder, there for woudnt know if this was easy to code or not

and also when is network and map set to be released in a stable version, soon i hope, if you can give a date on working network release i would be gratefull, as i cant play multiplayer as it always desyncs on me and my friend, and my friend gets fedup of these desyncs,

But none the less, this is a great project and i hope it never dies and continues to get better and better,

Yours Faithfully

actually TCP contains some error detection and correction. Desyncs happens if the server sends something the client did not expect or vise versa. The reason why this would happen is inside the game and can't be fixed with a simple error correction code. The new network code (in the network branch) is made with stability in mind. You will notice that desyncs are a rare event, specially compared to the current code.

Three Words:
When.
It's.
Done.

That's when most things released around here are released. The rest (graphics) are released When It's Presentable with (When They're Presentable) updates until it's Done.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

I can only guess about the network code, but I'd say there might be a release with the new network and a handful of bugfixes this month.

Dear Dalestan, do you have to be quite so rude, to new forum members, i simply asked a question, and i found your answer, quite offensive, about asking a smart question...

Is that really so "rude" ? I consider this rather polite, I've seen other answers to the same old questions
You have to forgive everyone here who's been around for a longer period, we get a bit touchy about 'when will it be done ?' questions
Well, back to work, lot's of it in the near future

well thats as maybe, spaceman, but the way i see things, users should be more friendly towards each other, and also if there was a sort of website or forum topic, that would give a rough idear as to when to expect a new version then there woudnt be any need for such posts, in the first place..

well thats just my oppion

Look, people ask "when will it be done?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!" practically every day. It gets answered, with the same answer, every time. You were just too lazy to look, or to use the search function. That's the truth of it, and quite frankly, I find that rudest. Expect rude answers when you waste people's time.

well kah, i am sorry, that you feel the way you do, but you still should not be rude to new forum members, and as was mentioned in some previous post, some members might not know how to search, or what to search for,

If they don't have the wits to search, they just look. Or are you going to tell me that they might need reading glasses? I can understand how people could overlook some of the obscurer questions, but this really gets asked all the time; you can't miss it. I've seen these people who have no respect for the time of the people whose help they want ask the same (often idiotic) questions over and over so many places on the internet it just makes me sad.

No. I could have been far ruder. Or I could have ignored you completely. That's actually easier for me, so take it as a compliment that I decided you might be teachable, and attempted to impart clue.

Now, let's not get a bad atmosphere here :)

You see, even with a professional company when people are payed and working full-time on a software, it's hard to tell when something will get finished. Let alone an Open Source project where people also have other things to do (RL for example), it is almost impossible to pick a date for something to be finished. Would someone be happy if I said in 2 weeks and we didn't meet that deadline? No, of course not. It will be done when it is done, which will take a bit of time because everyone is really busy with school/work.

The improved network seems almost done, so that will be a release pretty soon; this month we hope. It will be the same as 0.3.4 with a few fixes and stable networking. For all other projects I cannot and will not make any assumptions.

How many times did Half Life 2 cross tehire deadline?
Wouldn't it be better if they just had told everyone "When it's done" in the first place?

I know they could not, as they have publishers and such, but ignoring that, it woulda been better.

Don't be cocky. Youre time ain't worth that much, sereously. You can't demand people to be proud fror you taking of your preacious time, sereously.

There is, actually. Check the Wiki... find the 0.4 roadmap, and look at the status of each feature. Also, look at the actual file-by-file status for each individual feature (eg, map rewrite, enhanced multiplayer). Yes, it involves a bit of work, but the information is there. :)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy playing OpenTTD, with its improved multiplayer in the relatively near future.
