Re: The Thread Of Randomness
I was in Blackpool a few weekends ago, visiting the Blackpool Illuminations for the final time that year, always a great sight, its a shame in the morning they're all turned off and you're left with the stark bleakness of just... Blackpool.
However the weekend i was there it was basically foggy for the entire time, which gave me this really weird photo opportunity, as the famous Blackpool Tower cast its own shadow into the fog. Really was quite a breathtaking sight for the morning!

This thread is still my second most proud achievement to date. Two brief years off half my age and still going strong!
My most proud achievement is obviously finding a woman to whom I can be annoying for the rest of my days.

Question: how can you repeatedly fail an exam but still be able to drive a car? Doesn't really make sense when you think about it.

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Torn between getting Business Fibre installed at my home address, or getting a good dedicated server from OVH/SoYouStart. Both about the same cost (around £70/€85/$95), but OVH has better upload, my upload here won't go above 50mbps, even if i can get download of up to 1gbps Althouh I guess, if its with OVH, they also are responsible when the hardware breaks instead of me going "hmm" for several hours for each fault.
Re: The Thread Of Randomness
why won't ikea ship me the blahaj shark
Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Blåhaj is Swedish for "blue shark", but I guess you could work that one out.

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Are you intending to run a server? Generally speaking, something hosted in a proper datacentre is going to have better connectivity (direct routing to many different ISPs and Internet exchanges, symmetric gigabit or even more). If you’re hosting things yourself, you’d maybe want to invest in a UPS (and hope you don’t have any lengthy power cuts).Redirect Left wrote: ↑27 Jan 2022 01:50 Torn between getting Business Fibre installed at my home address, or getting a good dedicated server from OVH/SoYouStart. Typically, we had another power cut this morning for a good few hours (helpfully just after I was banished to a room having tested positive for COVID this morning ) following today’s storms. When this happens, it seems I retain a mobile phone signal (suggesting a battery backup at the mast) but nothing actually works (a router or link down along the way perhaps?), which is frustrating.

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Ah, this is something i had not considered, I'd only factored in the cost of the electric bill going up by the server hosted here. Definitely makes the offers by OVH/SoYouStart more tempting now. thankfully basically any offering is a cut above my current one, and it's insanely old Opteron which barely manages a single CSGO server at times. Looking for something with much more power and can do multiple servers and multiple games. But crikey, their offers are popular, things rarely available for the ones I am tempted by, and they need to be in Europe. I might just have to go nuts and get a 20+ thread server!orudge wrote: ↑29 Jan 2022 19:11 Are you intending to run a server? Hetzner is worth a look, especially their auction servers.
