My top artists this year were Pink Floyd, Masayoshi Soken (guess what I've been playing), Metallica, Jeff Wayne and Dream Theater.
My top songs were Stargazer (Rainbow), 21st Century Schizoid Man (King Crimson), ...And Justice for All (Metallica), The Eve of the Storm (Jeff Wayne), and Ordinary World (Duran Duran).
I spent like a week listening to Stargazer on endless repeat so that's not really surprising at all.
Spotify says my top genre is "Classic Rock" but that seems like a weird genre classification to me, three out of my top 5 artists are definitely on the prog rock - prog metal spectrum.
Not Spotify, but Last.fm tells me that my top artists in 2021 were:
Howard Shore
John Williams
Murray Gold
Weird Al Yankovic
Sigur Rós
Muse
Marina and the Diamonds
Pendulum
Linkin Park
Clint Bajakian, Peter McConnell and Michael Z. Land
Unsurprisingly, my top 10 for 2020 were exactly the same, but in a slightly different order. This of course is primarily looking at my PC listening (which is usually when I’m working), plus iPhone listening that I’m able to scrobble. On my PC I listen to my 20ish-year old Winamp playlist, which any new music I get gets added to. (Though I use foobar2000 rather than Winamp now, and am often streaming the music to Icecast on my server then listening to it whenever I am.)
I suspect you’ll get much the same results for my top 10 for most of the past 10 years!
I have listened to a chunk of other random music on Apple Music via our Echo though, which isn’t scrobbled, and indeed via Spotify when I had a premium trial earlier in the year.
I have around 293,000 tracks scrobbled since 2003 - let’s assume they’re an average of 4 minutes (I suspect most are longer than that in reality, especially as a number of them are 10 minutes or more), then it seems that’s a total of just over 2 full years of listening to music!
Artists:
1. Metallica
2. Queen
3. Disturbed
4. Pearl Jam
5. Rainbow
6. Arctic Monkeys
7. Greta van Fleet
8. The Strokes
9. The Beatles
10. Creedence Clearwater Revival
I'm happy with that, surprised to see Beatles on here though. I don't feel like I listen a lot to them!
Songs:
1. Go_A - Shum
2. Metallica - Master of Puppets
3. Blind Channel - Dark Side
4. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Have You Ever Seen The Rain?
5. Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe
6. Metallica - Wherever I May Roam
7. Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train
8. Judas Priest - Painkiller
9. Motörhead - Ace of Spades
10. Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter
It tends to lean toward heavier rock, but we have stuff like Go_A, CCR, Jimi Hendrix, and Pearl Jam to take us away from that a bit. I'm happy with the mix.
