Cannels/ships
Today I stumbled onto the article about the release of 1.7.0. This article stated that canals will be removed in the future and this might include the removal of ships. I don't think I will miss the canals, I've never used them in the game.
But I would like to hear what the reason/idea behind the possibility of removing ships is?

Re: Cannels/ships
Oh, good. Removing a feature of the original Transport Tycoon and one of the new OpenTTD features with a lot of work put into it would be terrible. Don't kid yourself, I only nearly fell for it because I figured that the people maintaining trunk might have seriously considered removing ships to reduce the effort towards keeping all the features maintained.Supercheese wrote:Current status:

Licenses for my work...
You automatically have my permission to re-license graphics or code by me if needed for use in any project that is not GPL v2, on the condition that if you release any derivatives of my graphics they're automatically considered as ALSO GPL v2 (code may remain unreleased, but please do provide it) and carry this provision in GPL v2 uses.
Please ask someone in-the-know to be sure that the graphics are done by me. Especially TTD-Scale, long story.

If it's a really bad feature that causes nothing but trouble, that should be no reason not to do away with it!SimYouLater wrote:a feature of the original Transport Tycoon and one of the new OpenTTD features with a lot of work put into it

Re: Cannels/ships
True, but I don't consider it a bad feature, or a feature that could be easily done away with. The thought was that, whether it was a desirable option or not, the powers that be had decided that maintaining ships was too much work.Kalen wrote:If it's a really bad feature that causes nothing but trouble, that should be no reason not to do away with it!SimYouLater wrote:a feature of the original Transport Tycoon and one of the new OpenTTD features with a lot of work put into it

Make the menus forcibly unavailable, or even better, reboot the operating system if it detects players trying to fiddle with the game to reactivate them? It's for our own good, after all, ships are nothing but trouble. Ships are like the bad guys our mothers warned us not to hang around with, so why would we want to do that?SimYouLater wrote:a feature that could be easily done away with
What if TPTB decided that maintaining OTTD was too much work? Then we wouldn't have OTTD any more, or at least updates to it. That's just a reality of life and we should accept it, rather than taking features for granted. Ships (and canals, and aqueducts) have been taken for granted all these years, and soon we will pay the price.SimYouLater wrote:whether it was a desirable option or not, the powers that be had decided that maintaining ships was too much work

Re: Cannels/ships
Let's not continue the joke.
OTTD, the main base is so simple... A game with all kinds of transport: Sea, earth and air.
The same day that ships will disappear, you kill the game.
No need to say more.

Build a thin canal.
It could call the water rail.
It's really fun and useful if you have fast ships.
