The Nations Game MkII

Post by Pilot »

So, a new thread for a game that has over 12,000 posts in the old topic. The new topic was suggested by Ark Royal, as the other one was rather large and cluttered.

Rules are the same as previous topic, but here they are again:

LIST OF RULES
  1. STARTUP AND GENERAL RULES
    1. One country per person
    2. Size: Countries must initially not be larger than the US (10 mln sq km). Size on earth must be kept smaller than 18 mln sq km and may be vetoed (see Rule 3.1)
    3. Slight terraforming is permitted, but no moving of large landmasses like continents
    4. Technology may be introduced at approximately the appropriate time according to the in-game time rate and year. Development of advanced technology (e.g. nuclear tech, rockets, aircraft carriers etc) must be announced be forever it is completed. Technologies that are too early for the timeframe or implausible may be vetoed (see Rule 3.1)
  2. WARS AND SECESSIONS
    1. Wars are to be fought with reasonable forces. Some aspects may be vetoed (see Rule 3.1) if necessary. During armed conflict a player may not report casualties or damages done to the other party, the other party must respond to attacks in a way that is considered realistic.
    2. Nukes may not be overused and must have a blast radius of less than 0.5 miles. Abuse of this rule can be vetoed (see Rule 3.1).
    3. Seceding is permitted, only if the "leader/owner" of a country decides it. The new territory must merge with another country or become a new, separate country administered by someone else.
  3. ADMINISTRATIVE RULES
    1. Veto Power: If a player disagrees with another's action, they may veto the action. At least two players are needed for the veto to succeed and the action to be taken back. Moderator's word is supreme to all other players, EXCEPT when the moderator is alone in his/her position. If this is the case, the moderator will be overridden (to prevent abuse).
    2. Rule Changing: After these initial rules are agreed upon, a majority vote is required to change a rule. A game moderator counts as two votes.
    3. Restarting: A 4:1 consensus is required to restart. Game mods count as two votes.
  4. GAMEPLAY
    1. Events within Countries: Events within a country may only be reported by the owner of that country, unless an act of war, a large scale disaster (i.e. Tsunami) or pre-agreed by the own of that country (either within thread or via PM)

Current Nations:
Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata (A321Pilot)
Kingdom of West Africa (Voyager One)
Helghan (Jacko)
United States of America (L.A. Noire Fan)
Federacy of Aegean Kingdoms (FLHerne)
Kingdom of Skyrim (Emperor Jake)
West America (Katve)
Florence Allegience (Opan)
The Aternian Empire (Last_Ninja_Monk)
Chicagoan State (Zakos)
United Nusantara Kingdom (YNM)
Kingdom of Brittonnia (SquireJames)
New Holborn Island (Aycliffe)
Rus Republic (Absolutis)
Tribes of Sambesi (D-CHGU)
The Glorious Peoples Republic of Arstotzka (APDAF)
Kingdom of Samkok (siu238X)

And, Begin!

I just wanted to post this when I noticed you've created a new topic.

Thanks, that helps having them all in one place. I know them from memory but it's been annoying not having all pics on one place. Much appreciated! :D

How many? For what purposes? Smaller schooners aren't really adapt for ocean operations, we recommend brigs, brigandines, barques or larger full-rigged ships.
A321Pilot wrote:We have also noticed you need Petroleum, which we produce. Would you be interested in starting a trade agreement?
Yes, we import petroleum. We suggest we open embassies in each other's country and exchange ambassadors, then we can also make trade agreements.

Cigarette and cigars factory opened in Rijeka!

Using finest imported tobaccos from the Caribbeans and Americas, and with a steady supply of extra-fine cigarette paper, a cigarette manufacture will supply west-European markets with approximately 180-200 tons of tobacco products monthly.
---

The Free City of Rijeka has been declared a Fee Port!

Rijeka government has issued a proclamation of Free Naval Trade. Any country wishing to use Rijeka as an import/export port, will be allowed free non-taxed trade trough Rijeka. The only demand we have is an annual fee of 100.000 Rijeka Karantans and employing Rijeka citizens at no less than 75% of required workforce.

/OT/ I forgot, 1 Rijeka Karantan is valued approximately as 0,1 gram of gold. Therefore, 100.000 Karantans are about 10kg of gold.
---

Maritimum Societatis Fluminense established!

A new shipping company has been established in Rijeka. Privately owned, this company will perform long range maritime shipping services between Rijeka and west Europe and the Americas. Currently, the company owns 4 barques of 2.500 tons and 2 full-rigged ships of 4.600 tons.

Another 6 full-rigged ships have been ordered in Rijeka's shipyards.

6 for the Navy and patrolling our coasts, so preferably with cannons too, though we can make them!

Yes, we should open Embassies, our Ambassador shall begin his long journey over shortly, in a specially hired vessel. Expect him in around 2-3 months time.
Voyager One wrote:The Free City of Rijeka has been declared a Fee Port!
We wish to make use of this, and will pay the fee. Though by the 75% workforce being Rijekians (what do you call someone from Rijeka V1, I don't mean to offend) do you mean the workforce at the port or on the ships?

Should we vote for a Moderator of this Game? Just so we all get to decide, I'll put a poll up if there are candidates and we can vote that way.

I think the Veto rule needs changing.
We need to allow counter vetoes so that if two people veto and only one (not counting the person being vetoed) counter vetoes then it only counts as one veto to prevent bullying and abuse.

ok so now we have created another thread...
meh, best get on with it.

@Rijeka - We wish for particularly large-bulk ships, but we don't know much about shipping and so we are going to ask if you could produce the type you think are the best, we will add an extra 1 million Smegs onto the price (1 Karantan = 2 Smegs)

Also maplock

Besides we are trading with Rijeka not your country.

We have made some expansion, including a new metal plant, and into North Africa to exploit some of their natural resources, and to boost our sand intake for our Primary Glass Works.

Okidoki, here we go...

APDAF wrote:I think the Veto rule needs changing.
One veto and one counter-veto cancel each other. We *could* change the veto rule that a majority of VOTERS is needed for a veto to apply - more "veto" votes than "counter-veto" votes, "neutral" votes obviously don't count.
---
A321Pilot wrote:Should we vote for a Moderator of this Game?
Naaah. I don't think we'll need one. Fun, not aggravation.
---

APDAF wrote:a typical price for a small ship in 1800 was about £1000.
You're insane! Take a look at the USS Constitution, costed over $300.000 in 1797. OK, we can argue that small coastal ships with no guns costed much less but 1000 is surely to low.
---
A321Pilot wrote:6 for the Navy and patrolling our coasts, so preferably with cannons too, though we can make them!
We recommend 6 frigates, something in line with this:

Image

Length: 62m
Displacement: 2.200 tons
Crew: cca 400-450 (including riflemen)
Speed: cca 13 knots (~24 km/h)
Guns: 40 x 24-pounder (11kg) long guns, 6 x 24-pounder bow-chaser guns
---
A321Pilot wrote:Rijekians (what do you call someone from Rijeka V1, I don't mean to offend)
OT speaking, impossible to translate in English - would sound something like "Riechani" pronounced in English. Plus with all the different cases and genders in Croatian - a mess. Let's use "Rijekans" or... ah whatever.
---
A321Pilot wrote:75% workforce being Rijekians
Not on ships. In transport/shipping/other companies that you'll either establish in Rijeka or hire existing ones.
---
Jacko wrote:We wish for particularly large-bulk ships
Merchant ships? Full-rigged ships are ideal for merchant operations, heavy, can carry a lot, can be decently armed, not extremely fast but decent as well...

Galleons would be an alternative but we don't build those.
---
Jacko wrote:1 million Smegs onto the price (1 Karantan = 2 Smegs)
Semi-OT: Gold price in 1800 was about $20 per ounce. 1kg~35 ounces meaning 1kg of golf is about $700. 1 Karantan is 0,0001kg of gold = 7 cents.

1 Smeg = 0,5 Karantan = 3,5 cents

We've both done our math very badly!

Can I please change that 1 Karantan is like 1 gram of gold not 0,1 gram, I really miscalculated heavily!

I find the money system confusing.

I just need to make sure no idiots think the platinum we are currently extracting could be used for 'fake coins'

However we are currently trying to improve our metal process, attempting to find a purer or stronger iron-based material. The development continues.

@Rijeka - Merchant ships seem like the most appropriate then, we could spare maybe one for specialised cargo transport across The strait of Gibralatar

OT - can we move back to about 1600 - medival warfare is loads of fun - invasions, the lot.

Also, England is sending a trade envoy to all currently known countries, trying to work out how to best exploit them for money.

!!!!!!Breaking News!!!!!!!
Foreign secretary executed for 'exploit' remark - he meant 'deal with'

We are also attempting to circumnavigate the globe.

We sell ships of all varieties, from merchant to warships - price upon demand.

OT - can I invade Asia? is that too extreme for so soon in the game or shall I wait a bit :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

MAP LOCK

Hooray, finally a new game!

I'll be busy for the next few days, but decided to get a country on the map anyway. Fancy description, history and other verbiage will be added retroactively later this week.

All hail the Federacy of Aegean Kingdoms!

As usual, we are willing to trade and exchange ambassadors with our neighbours and other nations.

OT - How long (IRL days) is 1 year? IIRC, last time we played 3 IRL days = 1 year or something similar...
---
Ark Royal wrote:OT - can I invade Asia?
IMO, that would be extreme for now, you still don't have enough resources. Keep in mind that "white" countries are not defenceless, there are nations and civilizations there too.
---
Ark Royal wrote:We are also attempting to circumnavigate the globe.
OK, we can assume that has already been done.
---
APDAF wrote:The dollar was almost worthless at the time while the pound was not.
Not quite. As I've found out, 1 pound was about 4-5 dollars.

As for the currency matter, the "gold standard" should apply. All currencies should be valued towards the gold first.
---
Jacko wrote: Merchant ships seem like the most appropriate then, we could spare maybe one for specialised cargo transport across The strait of Gibralatar
OK, one merchantman, something like this:

Image

That would be 50.000 Karantans or 50kg of gold (fully equipped of course).
---
A321Pilot wrote:our Ambassador to Rijeka has arrived!
Likewise!
---
A321Pilot wrote:Indeed you may, and we wish to take up this offer. How much?
Something like this then:

Image

120.000 Karantans each (120kg of gold).

BTW - invading Asia was a joke - on the basis that the British Empire pretty much went "where are there no colonial powers? Lets invade there.

What happened to going back to the 1600, with a decade a week? just a thought

Ooh, a new one! About time too I think; the old one was getting a bit monotonous.

MAP LOCK

The Kingdom of Skyrim is introduced to the world arena! Our nation has large resources of raw materials that we would like to export, including gold, iron ore, coal and timber. Economies in coastal towns are mostly based off fishing, and mining of various ores supports inland communities.

An iron works is being built near the capital so that we can turn our vast resource of iron ore into steel products.

The capital and the three other port cities are also equipped with shipyards, and we have a small navy of 30 ships, plus many freighters.

Stats:
Government: Monarchy
King: Karl II
Population: 10 million
Capital: Copenhagen
Currency: Kronor
