Photo Of The Month - July 2012 Entries

Hey all.

Apologies for the delay in putting up the entries. I was travelling all yesterday and sleeping most of today.

There is no theme this month. It is open to any transport-related photo as requested by the months previous winner, Ameecher.

So no one has an excuse for not sharing a photo this month. Look forward to seeing what we get

How to enter:
Easy - simply upload your image to this topic to enter or link it from a trusted site such as flickr, photobucket, DeviantArt, your personal website etc.
Uploading is preferred as it keeps things together. If you're linking from a URL, having a small 'preview' image and a link to a high-res image would be helpful.
Please avoid uploading direct to the wiki. I like to keep entries in a certain format for organisation reasons as well as keeping record of them in the entries topic and here. If you prefer to upload to the wiki, please keep it in the same naming format as other entries and inform me so I am aware of it. Name format is - month|year|POTM|user name.
For example: 0612POTM_DaveW.jpg

At the end of the month, this topic will close and a voting topic will be started with all the entries in for people to choose their top one.
All entries will be uploaded to the tt-forums wiki and stored there for voting and also for archive.
Entries close on the last day of the month, voting will be available till the 7th of each month (approximately).
The winner will need to contact me about what they want the next theme to be and then that will be posted in the entry topic for the next month. Then we repeat from there. Simple.

Hm, I think I'll start.

I took this picture during an open house event in a train tunnel. Here's some information about it: Lainzer Tunnel. Unfortunately only the pdf is available in english.

Now that looks pretty darn awesome!

I found it strange in Oslo too how in the tunnels they used 'bars' rather than cable for the over-head power. Is that just for saving space or are there other reasons? Rather curious of that one

this has been edited slightly, including addition of Sepia to make it look better, but I really need to capture the photo again with a better camera really, so this may not be the final image.

I think space is the main reason, otherwise they would use them outside of tunnels as well. In addition to that, Wikipedia says, that no parallel cables are needed, since the bar has a larger profile. On the downside the maximum allowed speed of the trains is lower, which is not a problem in this tunnel, since it's 160 km/h max. There's another tunnel for 250 km/h max being built in Austria which will probably be using these bars as well.

Mmm, quite a few places are adopting them now, on the lower platforms at the shiny Berlin Hauptbahnhof they have these and there are proposals to use them in tight situations in the UK. Pretty sure there is somewhere using them already but can't think for the life of me where it is.

I saw this thread, and the subject the photo had to be in and I decided to fire up the old archives, pretty stoked I found this picture again, although it shows a darker side of transportation.. it was taken after a carcrash in which two people were injured.

Crossrail are planning to use them in the UK.

In Japan where OHLE is very popular and 3rd rail is very rare, the fixed bars are used almost exclusively in subways. They don't seem to require much clearance, but then everything does when we compare with tube loading gague, which is impossible nowadays due to lack of an emergency evacuation walkway.

Mwahaha, I transported a delicious bar of Cadbury's Double Decker chocolate up the 15m. Thus climbing is now a form of transport, just like rowing .
