[UNIV] INFRA Foundations v1.0 (4 Apr 2012)

Post by PaulC »

INFRA Foundations v1.0

SAC has very kindly allowed me to update the old INFRA foundation graphics. :D These were previously released as part of the now-obsolete INFRA Landscape grf; this new grf contains just the foundations but now includes all of the missing sprites, including the halftile foundations needed for OTTD. (Anyone looking for the objects that were part of INFRA Landscape should look here.)

To download this grf you will need to make your way over to Simuscape (registration required).

The foundations are compatible with both TTDP and OTTD; TTDP users must use r2334 or better. Graphics are by SAC with the additional halftile sprites drawn by Quast65. The original INFRA Landscape grf was coded by RK, this new version by my good self. This grf is released under a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 Licence.

The NH-foundations are nice too, but they look like metal plates with rust on them (as intended by the artist of that GRF). This GRF looks more like concrete and in my opinion the lighter colors fit better in the bright TT-world.

Well, at least there is a choice now ;-)

Only one small thing I find annoying (and that's in all types of foundations, not just this one, also the original game foundations), is that you are able to see some pixels sticking out on some of the edges, at the West-North-diagonal and the North-East-diagonal of a tile.

Original foundations:

It looks like they are some kind of walls or blocks. Not really a problem with groundtiles, because they shift when you place another tile next to it. But it is a problem when you place tiles that can be built on water next to them.

I don't know if they even have any sort of purpose at all, except preventing my virtual inhabitants from falling of a cliff. So maybe it's an idea to remove them all together?

Hmmm, this discussion is a little o/t here...

But I've given it some thought since you asked me about this earlier, and I think it's necessary for the foundations to draw these edges. Consider the screenshot below: in this case the lines clearly show each height level, but if you remove them it would look like a single piece of flat land and the effect would not be good. So the lines are needed to create a proper impression of depth. I would be very wary of removing them, especially for such a highly specialised purpose as the one you need. You may be better asking about this in the technical forum, as there may be a better way of achieving what you want.

You have a very valid point there!
I play mostly on a very flat scenario, so I haven't had that visual problem. But I see what it's for now.
Great thing about this new foundation is that the edge is a lot more subtle than the original game foundation!

So back on topic ;-)

Is it also spam when others link to the German and Russian TTD communities?

Fortunately Ammler isn't a moderator here  . If you carefully read the rules you see there is no objection against linking as long as it isn't commercial (and if you read really carefully you see the only rules about linking are about signature links).

Also, SAC has been succesfully chased away from this forum by some passed actions from fellow forum members. If there is one person we shouldn't blame for releasing her grf's somewhere else it would be SAC.

Finally, we cannot enforce anyone to upload grf's on tt-forums and on tt-forums alone. So please continue discussing another nice release by SAC :).

I guess someone who is already registered at SAC's forum can download the grf and upload it here. After all, the license permits that.

It's a shame to have such a nice grf so badly accessible. I'd probably use it if it was on bananas.
But yes, I find the graphics very nice. They remind me a bit of rollercoaster tycoon, even though that never had foundations like this. Weird, isn't it? :D

Indeed - thanks for clearing that up Hyronymus! :)

No one is obliged to download this grf, and no one is being forced to sign up for anything they don't want. There's sufficient information in the first post of this topic for people to make up their minds.

Ok, since we can't have them on tt-forums, how about BaNaNaS? (or wherever the capitals are)

That's a question SAC would have to answer, it's not up to me.

Your idea of spam is somewhat from a different planet!

There are several reasons as to why I have a registration requirement, but the most important one is to avoid having - ironically enough - spam attacks or other commercial stuff being posted. I'm not interested in having a long list of members to show up. Those who register at Simuscape do so because they're interested in the work that's presented there, and in the end to download files being developed!

And why on earth is it strange to have my own files located on my own site?

Besides, anyone interested in INFRA-files and whatever is being published, only has to register and it's all done... Simuscape isn't the only forum that requires registration actually... :))

I understand your reasons SAC :)

But at least in Bananas?

My main reason for this request is that there are times where I want a particular GRF that is no longer available at it's home page, and lose hours looking for some alternative download or not even being able to download it at all...

Your work is that kind of work that is a shame if no longer available to the community... ;)

To THE (Open)TTD Community or to THE TT-FORUMS (Open)TTD Community? As SAC explained it's out there to grab, just register at her site  .

Anyhow, Bananas would be nice and I do think it'll give SAC's work a larger scope. Not sure how many people download stuff from Bananas without being a member here oron other similar sites though.

I understand why you have it on your webpage like this SAC, but I think it is a real shame to not have the newGRFs on bananas. By having them there you get the viability of them being on multiplayer servers really :) And I personalyl think that is where it really gains the amount of people playing it, testing it, and enjoying it in the end.
Btw. the foundations look great!

I am a member of her site since the beginning of March

My request is not about having to register, but have it more spread in alternative download spaces in case something goes wrong with the primary download space :)
