Nope - if you look closely under the lights at far right, you can see the blurry outline of one of the two very cold looking men who seemed to be walking around tending to / lighting the fires. I am not sure if it is an applied gel-like fuel, or if it is centrally piped gas, but it seems it does involve guys walking through an active station throat to run. This is not some remote backwater either - Jamaica station would typically still see several trains an hour even late at night, and generally gets over 1000 trains per day.Nordic Dragon wrote:Surely that is done remotely rather than someone having to do it manually?

But it's ridiculous how often there's some problem. That the trains seem to be always 5-10 minutes late is no big deal since I don't need to catch any connecting trains, but carriages missing, carriages present but locked and unusable, interior lights not working, doors not working, engines not working, signals not working, overheads not working ... people committing suicide, people committing a crime on the train (the heck!), medical emergencies (alright, none of those are DB issues, but still).
It's ridiculous. Either I'm the most unlucky person in the world when it comes to train traveling or no train ever gets anywhere without running into some trouble.
And everyone here is always saying how efficient the German Network is by comparison! Looking at my travel record, the last train I was on a train in Germany (from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Schoenefeld Airport), it was 25 minutes late! Which is always good when you're trying to get to the airport in time for a flight!That is very true! If it wasn't for those arrows would you have known which direction was front and the rear? These coal trains have at least 84 wagons.
Is Coal traffic still rather big on the Australian Railways? We export a lot of coal. Last week I spent an hour at a station and watched four loaded coal trains heading to Kooragang Island, Newcastle to unload.
