Hello,

I just started playing OpenTTD again after almost 8 years of not playing and I must say I am astonished about how fun this game still is.

Though I must say that I do not quite know how to get bigger airports. The City airport came out of nowhere but I am in 1975 and I am starting to be in the need of a bigger airport but I don't know how to obtain one. My main cities have around 10k citizens and I can't keep 2 airports running at the same time, it's quite space consuming.
Do I need to build heli pads as well or can I obtain the better airports at a certain year?

Basically, within 5 years from your current date you'll get the metropolitan airport, then 15 year after that, the international airport.
