Today, I tried to improve my drawing skills with Zephyris' tutorial [1]
I'm afraid I failed, but see it yourself and tell me what you think if it... I think that with much tweaking, it could be even good :)

That's not bad! To improve it I would say you need to emphasise the shading and noise a bit...

Zephyris, I have no idea how do you generate such a fine noise.. I just use HSV noise in GIMP with only value being set.. others are 0. But it still isn't the same that you get..

You just need slightly more noise! The noise both textures the surfaces and improves the dither on conversion to 8bpp.

Further to my last post here is an updated version... What I have done is:
Increased noise slightly.
Added more shading via black airbrush.
Added shading detail around the edges of the roof and windows - these are key to giving some depth to the object, otherwise it looks like a textured box.
Added the windows in the first construction stage.

hmm.. And it seems you won't reveal your secrets :D
But now I think it is really starting to look nice...
Now gotta think what building would it be..

There really is no secret to my noise! The amount (intensity) is adjusted according to texture and the dither in export to 8bpp. In paint.net

/me knows what to do..
1) Install .net framework and paint.net
2) Draw more things

And I know where should this building be too.. sprite 2095.. A beginning of a new industry. :)
oh.. I'm so smart, am I not?

I do recommend paint.net, it is nowhere near as feature rich as the gimp, but it is very very useable, and standard ms clipboard is a bonus too!

Im off to the pub, but here are WIP stage 2 and stage 3 sprites for some generic temperate buildings. The stage 3s still need windows...

So.. for oil refinery, we have this atm :). Zephyris, tweakings of the oil tank are again welcome.. I don't have the construction stages yet as I didn't draw the Zephyris' way.. The little house has the construction stages as presented upwards.

BTW, Zephyris, nice houses :)
But I now added cc to Roujin's toyland trees, and I think that I might draw some more..

I started working on farm. So far I've got that. I'll change ground later.

Ive been working some more on the temperate buildings, and here are the houses i have made:
stone (grey), brick (red-brown) or painted (painted) structure
tiles (red), slate (grey) or thatch (rubbish) roofs
Windows could use a bit more shading...

So... Scale...

Attached are representive buildings from temperate and tropical, and the (potential) graphics replacements. The scale is rubbish.

Take the top right original houses as a reference.
Temperate flats are ~1.5x too big
Temperate office block is the correct scale
Tropical house is ~2.5x too big
Tropical flats are ~2x too big
Tropical office block is the correct scale

Should all climates use the same scale?
Which scale should be used?
