GRF encoding failure at sprite#3071

Post by Prof. Frink »

GRFCodec always fails to encode trg1.grf. It always stops at sprite 3071. I tried renaming the backup and re-running it but it still gets to 3071 and then stops.
The error message says:
Grfcodec has caused an error in
GRFCODEC.EXE.
Grfcodec will now close.

If you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer.
Im running the latest version of Grfcodec (0.92) and WinME

Is there any way to get more details about the crash in Win ME? I'd need the crash location and the registers at the time of the crash to investigate it.

Below are the three windows that I get when I use it:

I press OK on window 1, which dissapears and is replaced by window 2, which then stops and window 3 appears.

This only seems to happen with trg1.grf, I tried the others and they worked fine.

How would I go about getting these? I don't know much about computers.

Sorry, these don't help. But I don't know anything about Win ME, so I can't help you there either... maybe someone else...

I have no idea if Dr Watson is included in Windows Me, but try going Start, Run, and type drwatson, then start GRFCodec and try the encoding.

If Dr Watson does not exist in Me, I've attached it to this post - no guarantee it'll work though, I don't have Me.

Thanks - loads of information there, I think the Technical Details page in Advanced view might help Josef!

Advanced view? Technical Details? I just looked at it with a hex editor

Anyway, here's a version that might fix this crash. I'm not announcing it yet until you (Frink) tell me whether or not it does.

[edit] removed the version; see below

If its too hard, I should be getting a new computer (reasonably) soon which'll have XP and so no problem.

That would solve the problem for you, but other people who have the bad luck to own ME will still be screwed.

I think its probally because not many ppl are useing grfcodec ... so bugs errors take longer to get reported. so just because you are the only one that we have heard of getting this error doesnt mean you are the only one

Prof. Frink, can you send me another crash report for the new version? I don't think it's possible that the crash is at the exact same location.

Maybe email it to me (address see site at sig) instead of posting it if you prefer.

Thanks, too bad it didn't fix it.

However, I did use this opportunity to rewrite that part of the code to be more robust (and, as it turns out, faster and better). I've now posted the final 0.9.3, and I hope this doesn't crash for you anymore. If it does, please send me another crash log :)

Ah, hmm, looks like I was forgetting another possibility when removing that buffer overrun. Here's one more preliminary version, I do hope that this one works better.

Sorry that it's taking so long to fix this crash, but it just never happens on my computer...

AAK, can you please press the "Details" button, and copy and paste what you have in there (if the preliminary version doesn't help). Even if you can't see the text, you should still be able to cut and paste...

[edit] removed the attachment; it's now available on the GRFCodec site at http://www.ttdpatch.com/grfcodec/
