hi, do I have to try and install my dos version??

OpenTTD is a fully open-sourced reimplementation of TTD, written in C++, boasting improved gameplay and many new features.

so is it just a no disk version that allows you to mod more easily?

Yes. Though you still need the original game files to run openttd.

Those files can also be downloaded, so you don't need the game. When you install OTTD, you will be told to locate the location for your TTD game, and it will use those graphics automatically. Sorry for not being so good in explaining, but check the links RiTi provided ;)

i have the dos cd which doesn't work on XP, and looking in the file it said it installed to, i couldn't see any of the needed files, but they were on the cd?? and also the openttd windows installer doesent work, when i input the installed folder, or the d drive (cd drive) it says it can't continue without the original installation folder.

thanks,
Adam

First download OTTD 0.4.8 or a Nightly. Unzip the file to, for instance c:\program files\ottd. Copy from the original CD of Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Dos) the non packed files from the main directory (trg1.grf, trgc.grf, trgh.grf, trgi.grf, trgt.grf and sample.cat) to your new c:\programs files\ottd\data directory. Then you're finished. :)

So you don't need an original/dos install. The files on the Dos CD are unpacked.

Also again, see the WiKi.

no, the dos version had a GM.cat, which nobody has figured out how to decode yet.
JPG SUX!!! USE PNG!!!
There are times when JPG is useful, TTD screenshots is not one of them. Please use PNG instead.

Correct. The GM files are found only on the original windows version of Transport Tycoon DeLuxe. Try the internet to buy a second hand copy (e-bay).

It's on the legal edge. Not all countries act the way written in WiKi.
