At what angle do solar rays fall in TTD?
Look at this building. As you can see, the left wing is shaded by the central part of the house. The question is: how much of the wing should be left not shaded?

Good question. I don't know if there's a TT standard for that, but maybe some graphics artist (like Zimmlock) has some standard he uses.

Well, perhaps I'll send this to George for his xUSSR set (the scale there is non-standard as well), or will code this and some upcoming ones as a separate set.
And about the size... I'm not sure if the game allows to use sprites bigger than 2x2.

Yes the scale is badly off, but I don't think the game allows buildings bigger than 4x4. There's another nearby thread asking this question.

I tried to redraw the building to match other TTD houses, but it turned out ugly. And anyway, if I draw all my buildings like this, they won't look out of scale =]

And they'd go with the smaller Russian trains too... You're changing the scale of the whole game, is what.

onodera, one advice: try making that building 2x2, that way the large building and the soccer field should fit in well. It will be a small soccer field, though. What is that supposed to be? a college? The building looks more like a hotel or a residential building, but in that case a swimming pool or a tennis court would fit best in the size and be more recognizable
and sorry to go offtopic, but: lately I'm hearing too much about those -out of TTD scale- russian trains, but I have no idea what is that about... I think I never saw them before.
There are no recent posts about it... who works on that? is that on the forums?
Also, I remember you first said that the russian trains would be bigger (talking about the toyland>lego set trains being too big) but now you say they will be smaller?
As a graphics artist I must say that TTD scale is already small enough, if you make any smaller trains you will have the "Pixels set"

Unfortunately, if I make the building 2x2, it will be really hard for the game to place it.
The xUSSR set is being developed by George and AgRiG on ttdrussia.net. Well, I don't remember ever posting in Toyland>Legoland thread, but the trains are going to be longer than usual. [NB: I'm strongly against that, as they look ugly as hell at the bends, but it's George's set, and he likes long stuff] And they will be thinner as well. Let me explain the Russian trains. I've only seen one screenshot of them. They are both larger, and smaller, than normal TTD trains. This is because they are in realistic proportions. Compared to real trains, TTD trains are very short and stubby. IRL, proportionately, the passenger cars should be the same height and width, but twice as long. This is how the Russian trains work, I believe, although they may also be slightly narrower than normal to make the proportions even more accurate. My point with the Lego trains was that you can have an extra-long (bigger) vehicle and it does work. My point here, with the apartment building, is that the people that would be in the Russian trains are smaller than regular TTD people, so it's OK for the building to be scaled smaller.

Just cause Finnish, or Russian rail cars look short compared to American ones, this doesn't mean the average height of people is lower to.

I don't mean Russians are midgets, I just mean that, as drawn and shown in the game, they would proportionately be smaller.

I have to say, the game will look totally different than anything else ever in TTD, but it will be very sharp for sure.

I say they look great, and as for the corners issue, so what? Every train game I've played has looked worse when trains take a corner. I couldnt care less to be honest.

Actually we had to do something like that in the Japan set earlier: the 500 series shinkansen engines are too long, so much that it was impossible to make them, for the design of the cabine, look ok in one sprite. So the sprites I drew for the 500 series' engine are actually one half of the engine only.
Your idea seems hard to do, it would require serious work for artists, but yet it sounds good. I'd gladly re-addapt all the traincars needed for the Japan set, but in the future, not now.
