Graphics

Post by WWTBAM »

With all these arguments and whatnot about GFX competitions, i thought it would be a good time to post my ideas. Now we have to Graphics forums, and sometimes we get sets being released for OpenTTD that TTDPatch users never know about because it was released in the OpenTTD Graphics forum. Ive been thinking it might be an idea to have one centralized Graphics forum for 8bpp graphics that both TTDPatch and OpenTTD can read. Maybe move the TTDPatch one to somewhere else and leave the OpenTTD one alone for its 32bpp development. Then any extra graphics related talk for 8bpp stuff can go into it. This forum would also be for NFO coding help/releasing GRFs. Some of these ideas have been floating around in my mind for a while now. Raichase kind of helped me want to post it fully with the mention of having the GFX awards being for OpenTTD players and TTDPatch players/artists.

roboboy. I hope this is okay and wont start any more arguments.

The best way would be to create Graphics subforum (like OTTD, or TTDP subforum) with 3 sections: 8bpp, 32bpp and dev.
Unfortunately there may be a lot of problems, since some devs do their packs for onlu OpenTTD, or TTDPatch, but I like your idea.

In the screenshot forum you can see what is for what on the tags people use like [TTDP] or [OTTD] or even [TTT] (for the teamgame. :) ). That works nicely. :)

Well, the "graphics section" has been and still is the core of the TTDPatch forum (69206 posts, against only 23205 in "General TTDPatch"). Since beginning, it isn´t used only to present graphics but it was and it still is used heavily for TTDPatch related problems and development.

In fact, it´s the most important "development forum" for TTDPatch (see higherbridges, canals, riverbanks, numerous discussions about train set sublties, railway-specific discussions, etc., pp.)

You can´t bring about more damage to TTDPatch than by taking away the graphics section from the TTDPatch forum.

No.

No.

Personally, as I´m dedicated to TTDPatch, I won´t use any other graphic´s section rather than TTDPatch´s one, neither for my own work nor for any discussion related to TTDPatch.

That gives another question. Why do we have TTDP and OTTD, not just one TTD project. Do devs hate each other, or is there any other reasonable answer?
I used TTDP for a long time and lately switched to OTTD (mainly for Linux version and bigger maps).

Disclamer:
My post is neighter against TTDP nor OTTD, I just feel that making same things twice is waste of time which could be use to make one, even better game.

As much as I hate it, it looks like there is a taboo on this subject. Almost everytime this is mentioned people will get frowned upon. A reasonable argument however, is that for example that Patchman has worked on his patch for so many hours of his life to perfect it, that he doesn't feel the need of dropping the project or merging it with someone elses work. Same goes for the ohterway around.

I don't like the current stance from some people that hold grudges towards the other game version and in severe cases even it's userbase and supporters. They should be frowned upon IMHO. :?

One thing I've always thought would be useful in forums (and if this is in phpbb3, awesome) is the filtering of threads. You could apply a tag to a thread, like [TTDP], [OTTD] or [WIP] and [REL] for that matter, then you could filter out all the topics except [REL][TTDP] ones, for instance.

This is probably out in the realms of fiction, alas. :(

Because they both have different philosophies behind them and devs have invested quite some time in either one of them as Mr. X already mentioned.

I think it would be a good idea to merge the sections, or at least make a pointer in the OTTD graphics section that the TTDP graphics section is better for 8bpp graphics, I've seen quite some people showing 8bpp graphis in the OTTD section while the TTDP section fits better for that IMO.

But I think there is a point in the OTTD Graphics section - for graphics that implement features that TTDP doesn't have.

Perhaps put in the Forum Description of TTDP Graphics (perhaps even name it TTDP Graphics with the prefix of TTDP) that it is the development forum for graphics of TTDP and sets that can be used in OTTD also.

Something similar in the OTTD section like, For development of graphics for OTTD only. All crossover sets to go into the TTDP Graphics forum.

Perhaps an announcement in each forum would do it better.

This idea will never go through, some peeps have silly reasons to hate OpenTTD, thus it does need a seperate graphics forum.

You're even being biased with your statement - SOME people hate TTD Patch too.

Why these discussions about which one is better, isn't it great you get to choose between different products ?
We're leaving sections where they are now

This discussion isn't about which is better it is about why do we have two different forums for graphic projects.

Well, for the reasons some people have stated, the two forums will remain separate. The projects are still too different graphically, in many ways, for things to be combined.

Seconded, why is it always 'OTTD' OR 'TTDP' and not 'OTTD' AND 'TTDP'? I mean, none is better and none is worse.

Does that change the point?
