Expandable Industries

Post by wallyweb »

I searched the forums for "Expandable Industries" and came up empty except for my post in CPCNMAN007's flour industry thread over in Graphics.

Rail stations are expandable in that you can add tiles later and increase the catchment area.

Can something similar be applied to industries?
Add tiles to expand an industry consequently expanding production capacity?

No.

This cannot be done manually. However, industry tiles may change over the years and o/c the industrys production capacity may change according to this.

It wouldn't be easy to add such a functionality to the current system. And I think it wouldn't be consistent either: currently, the production of industries don't depend on their sizes at all.

True. Well, if an enterprising patcher gets bored and is looking for a challenge, perhaps some day a long time from now ...

Otoh - the simple "Fund prospection of production increase" with varying level of success rate (and ungodly cost - like 1 million) would be nice. Obviously works only for source industries.

Say:

Production levels: (production level 3 is 135 tonnes for coal mine, lvl 2 is 72 tonnes, lvl 4 i 270 tonnes etc)

Inc to level 2 - 50% success rate - 250k (72 tonnes)
Inc to level 3 - 40% - 500kl (135 tonnes)
Inc to level 4 - 30% - 1 mill (270 tonnes)
Inc to level 5 - 20% - 1,5 mill (540 tonnes)
Inc to level 6 - 10% - 2 mill (1080 tonnes)
Inc to level 7 - 5% - 2,5 mill (2160 tonnes - possible only with funded increase)

nice idea!
btw, each industry has has a empty button (lower right corner) in it's properties.
may be this button should be something like 'make donation' or 'investment'

Or the button could be "Prospect"? :)

I love uzurpator's ideas... they somehow involve the degree of realism that I love about the game.

This idea sounds better to me as well, and it would be a good place to spend the lots of money that you get towards the end of the game. Unfortunately, I'm already working on some other things, so I can't start this right now.

Oh, and I think the idea needs some fine tuning. For example, the button should be disabled for 6 months after being pushed. After all, it takes time for the industry to spend your money and actually find those new resources (or fail to do so), so you can't max out an industy in a month or two.

Agreed.
Also this might prove an acceptable resolution to those oil wells that tend to go dry early in the game.
Also the coding should be such that the six month lag after starting to prospect for one type of resource should not affect the ability to prospect for a different type of resource.
