This is the announcement of the newest version in the main forum: http://forum.simutrans.com. Usually, I announce here only more or less stable versions.
The 87.00 is quite a major change, since it enforces a timeline for all vehicles, buildings, road, tracks, cars, and only serves factories that are not overflowing. It features much more vehicles than previous versions, but it is still beta and not a stable one. (As you can easily guess by the "00".) The last really stable is the 86.06.
----------------------- forum.simutrans.com ----------------------------------
This is a major change, not only in optics but in gameplay.
- Factories deliver goods only, if reciever is not overcrowded. Just in time logistics is required.
- full timeline (many new vehicles) for almost everything but industry
- bonus will change with time due to increasing maximum speed => after 50 years or so, your income will noticely drop, if you do not invest in new vehicles
- CNTRL-key now consequently used for up/down decisions => easy multiple level stations, remove, schedules, ...
- topmost window close by DEL or ESC
(This means of course, that many new errors wait for discovery.)
Since the name of the refinery was changed and the goods are moved, industry chain of old games might be broken. If you are unhappy with that, you can copy the factory.*.pak of 86.10.4 or so into the pak-folder.
Recommended starting year: 1900-1910.

pak64 is the old graphics paks. Which is fine on 1024x768, and probably on 1280x1024. But on realy big resoulutions you'll need bigger tile-images. Thats the background for the 128pak files. I don't know how far the 128pak files have came.. a half year ago or so, when I last played simutrans they did not contain that many objects as 64pak.
Offcorse if you're on a lower-end mache 64pak files would be faster.

I am trying PAK128, and must say, have not found any missing objects, at least with any of the example savefiles found on the net, so I think pak128 is better, since the details are much more...
I am currently using the version 86.10.5, and must say, I am oversatisfied with it. Despite trying to hunt bugs (must be professional deformation ), i managed to find only one, which has been there for all the versions I tried. It is the pathfinding bug. Well, the pathfinding itself (I mean finding the path) is great. One of the best AI-s I ever seen. Never could confuse it. Mathematics pays off at the end
BUT, if you change a route, sometimes the game crashes, if a pathfinding is currently in progress, and analyizing EXACTLY the same block at the same time you destroy (I was talking abount train tracks). Then the game crashes , or leaves invalid signals (blocked, will not change from red, are unaccessible, as this block DOES not exist ?!!). The only help is to save it often and destroy a rail-block BEFORE and AFTER the problematic block, then hence the block itself, otherwise a crash may follow alse.
The only thing I miss is PLAINS!???? So Prissi, will they ever be implemented?
If still in doubt, try this :

Sorry. I must have given an unclear explanation. I recommend to use the version of Simutrans 86.10.5. which I personally tested and can confirm that it is very stable.Milky wrote:ok well sorrie to be soo stupid about this but tell me exactally what im ganna need then cause I guess ill go with 128 and you said the newest under 87.00 is 86.10.5 and it works pretty well?
Get it here :
http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php/topic,501.0.html
If you want to experiment, use 87.00, which is incompatible with the last version of pak128 (pak64 also works, but gives a less detailed graphic), but has new features. This version uses different factory chain for rafinery and goods delivery, is so incompatible with old savegames! This version should be very buggy, so try at your own risk.
Get it here :http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php/topic,583.0.html
I will not test this version yet, hence it is unstable, I will rather wait for at least 87.00.1 or even more, when other players have already spoted some bugs...
You need at least one of the executable forms (Win32 GDI,Win32 SDL or Linux if you use Linux !)+pak64 (or pak 128 with the older version if you want, gives better graphics). You have to extract this two things in the same folder. Then you can start by starting :
Simutrans.exe
You may register at the simutrans forum :
http://forum.simutrans.com/
I am sure, they will gladly help you...
If you refer to the version posted here on forums :
http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?t=21356
This is rather old buggy version. Here you need also an
executable+Pak64 OR Pak128
to get it started.
Makobj24 is the tool for making new objects (lokomotives, trucks, scenery), but this is very advanced topic...
I think you would need all downloads, althorough I do not know which version of pak128 are you refering. Some have additinal patches. Hence, you need all of them........also when I go into that thread under 128 theres 3 downloads do I get them all or no?
Btw. pak128 is a mod for simutrans ....
That is still not all ...
Some more explanantion :
If you wish to use this new version (87.00), which links are also posted here in this thread and also on official simutrans forum, you need the following :
if you use Windows :
simuwin-87-00.zip
OR
simuwin-sdl-87-00.zip
For the SDL version, i guess you also need the SDL library, I am not sure, since the "normal" Win32 Simuwin (GDI) is good enough for me.
if you use Linux :
simulinux-87-00.zip
AND mandatory:
PAK64 meaning all of the following :
simupak64-87-00.zip
AND
food64-86-06.zip
AND
waste64-86-03.zip
you need the makeobj 25 ONLY if you want to to create your own objects.

Just extract both (executable and pak64 files) in the same dir, and start Simutrans.exe, and it magically starts.
Btw. If you get a crash when starting, try setting a lower screen resolution (Prissi, will you solve the resolution crash already?????? Some people have 640x400 and 800x600 monitors, you could make a resolution check at the beginning, not just a crash !). Read the README file shipped. In this case you need to use the "-" parameter, to force a lower resolution. You can use an lower then your current screenresolution or exactly your screen resolution.
If you just want to update an old version, you can just extract the new version over the old one, but be carefull !!! While I used this procedure for all of 86.00.x series, and it worked everytime, it MAY not work, if overwriting 86.xx.x series with 87.xx.x. Please read Release Notes!
I hope this helps. If you do still not understand something, ask .
