Pacer Demolition Club (Was: 142/143/144 Appreciation Club)

Post by andel »

Give me one good reason why I shouldn't dump the lot in Badgers back yard. They would all collapse like caravans so they'll fit.

Discuss.

I don't think anyone needs to reply in this thread because there is no good reason. Although, maybe that they've managed to keep a lot of lines open...

They are nasty trains, whenever I get one I groan and mutter something featuring the words 'bouncy castle' or 'nodding donkey', at the time they were a cheap solution to shortages of trains, but now they need replaced with something decent.

These classes are crap trains, although they probably have helped to keep many lines open. One of the few good things Arriva managed to do during their Northern stint was replace the bus seats on these trains with proper airline style seats, which meant passengers did not get jolted around as much.

They do have one advantage for scenic routes however - the 141 used on the Weardale Railway allows a great view of the countryside, far better than could be achieved with coaching stock. The 142s used on the Whitby line have allowed a similar advantage, plus the speed limit on these routes is low enough to stop the donkeys nodding too much.

Ah yes, there's also the problem with when a Pacer hits something... that collision with the 86 (or 87?) springs to mind....

They work reasonably (though still with bus-seats) on the Darlington-Middlesbrough line, but thats smooth welded rail so you don't get the full fun of the fair.

You know, this one: http://danger-ahead.railfan.net/reports ... 90623.html
and a better picture...

Luckily the pacer was empty. You have faith in the underframes folks, the underframe managed to pull apart a class 87. As for the bodyshell... The less said about that the better...

A Class 87 coming through the wall at 50mph is definately going to spoil your day.

Still, one Pacer down...

Might I suggest that what's really needed is some kind of jackass attempt to jump a class 87 over a lineup of 20 Pacers. Or maybe some kind of Pacer demolition derby.

Edit: ...in Derby

I sometimes wish that someone could do what Brainiac Science Abuse and Top Gear do to Caravans to the Pacers (fill them up with a random explosive  )
