Washington DC and surrounding suburbs in 1024x1024 (WIP)

Post by Donoteat »

I don't know if it's standard practice here to show WIP pics, but here I am.

Took a break from my normal duties with Rigs of Rods, and started working on a scenario... thought it would only take a few hours at most. I guess I was wrong... been at it for two days now.

I finished the southern half of the city above the Anacostia River. Major named avenues are reasonably accurately placed... individual streets are approximated. Neighborhoods are in realistic locations, though some are a bit distorted. (it's very difficult to get the angles of avenues right.)

The outer suburbs will be significantly more approximated; most likely I'll only do highways and very major roads and geographical features.

The map's outer boundaries just about fit around the Beltway. Should be finished in a week or two, I hope.

EDIT: uhhh... how do I make the images show up as actual images and not downloadable attachments...?

Image has to be a certain size, 800x600* or smaller.

* Not sure on actual size!

I'm not worrying so much about accurate street placement outside of the District, so the rest of the map should go quite a bit faster than the first 10% of it.

No he isn't, if you use the drop down menu to take a screenshot, the menu appears in the screenshot. The only way to avoid doing this is by using ctrl+s instead.

I think Lord Aro want to say about the black boxes on that drop down menu on the last screen, and the transparent areas on the previous ones.

Otherwise nice scenario, I will waiting for it :)

Finished the District, now working on Maryland suburbs. It's not as accurate, but it's passable, at least.

Maze of highways on the Virginia side of the river...
Also, I figured it would make gameplay more interesting if I added the old Alexandria canal, now long since gone and forgotten, to the map. It goes right through the grounds of the Pentagon, which is going to make that area awkward to do...

I do like this(huge understatement...). Will you leave room for railroads, etc.? Also, VAST can make for some really nice parks.

Switch to game mode(alter extension to .sav) -> build stations -> switch back to editor(alter extension to .scn).

Or just release the scenario as a save.

It's that simple?
Didn't know that. Would be awesome to have a large swath of parkland that says "Can't build here! Owned by National Park Service!" when you try and build on it.

In an ideal world the company owner would look like Ranger Smith from Yogi Bear, but I suppose we can't have everything.

Anyway, here's a few more progress shots. I got the Arlington corridor finished, and a decent amount of the southern half of the map. You'll notice the beltway looks like a massive square; that's because I'm just not masochistic enough to place everything totally accurately when there are essentially no geographical landmarks anywhere to give me any points of reference.

EDIT: uhhh.... I accidentally saved the scenario using chill's patchpack and now I can't open it in 1.0.3.
Is there a way to undo this or do I have to start from scratch a second time?

I'm afraid it can only be opened in the patched version, or any version that has a savegame version higher than that of the one the pack uses. Unless one of the commits to trunk bumps that version though, you'd have to do something in the source code to achieve it.

If you have a backup, though it means re-doing some of it... you may want to use it.
