Patch: Shape Towns

Post by Roest »

Just a small patch to limit big town sprawls.

Features:
Towns get a random maximum radius at creation.
Option in the town authority window to increase that radius.

The patch can be turned off in the option. Also you can set a minimum radius (which is actually the minimum maximum radius) and the maximum radius within the range 5-25.

In the editor you can adjust this random radius in the town view.

Have fun.

Thanks to Yexo for explaining the save stuff :D

Yes, it does. Even if the letter of the law doesn't forbid non-English text in screenshots, I'm quite sure the spirit does.

The letter of the law doesn't forbid saying it in different form other than a sarcastic remark either. Certainly helps the friendly spirit.

Roest, having the screenshot in english would help greatly evaluating the work of the patch. It's just a matter of presentation.
Not all of us can read german.
Dwelving into a patch just to figure out the internals is not the most appealing job around.
Just my two cents advise.
If you are not ready to work a bit for your ideas, it means they don't count much for you.

There's already patch for that in trunk. Apart from that the idea is interesting.

Hmm, here's my schoolboy german translation:

Street repairs from town finance
Maximum town radius increase

is that right?
Erm...
Thats It.

The 1:1 mapping is quite right

To restore the sense:
bobulator wrote:Street repairs from town finance
"Finance street repairs of the town." (Which is not added by the patch BTW)
bobulator wrote:Maximum town radius increase
"Increase maximum town radius."

And the further text says:
"Support the town in the extension of its city borders."

So, enough of German lessons now

hmm... 4x4 grids are boring. couldn't you just decrease the branching probability, so that the town wouldn't want to create a junction on every roadtile... This way, the town will basically just build in one direction and the user could manually trigger the branching manually to enable the town building roads in another direction.
Please note that making curves should not be the same as branching, so that the town could build roads around stationary objects like railway lines and industries.
I think it makes the town look more interesting then just 4x4 grids.

I think you should also have your sarcasm meters checked.

Thats a fantastic concept, but I do agree with the 4x4 squares not really being ideal.

Are you able to disable this and do a nother screenshot? so we can see what town growth would be like?

Also what happens to the buildings on the edge if you decrease the spread of a town?

It's gone. Town road layout settings are in trunk already.

What do you mean? You cannot decrease the radius on a running game. Other than that it doesnt allow town grow outside the radius.

Oh I missed that!

I thought this could be done "in game" not just "in editor"

The patch is quite cool.
But i do not like the max 25 tiles limit. Is there a way to allow bigger cities?
