New disaster: War?
I don't know if this has been brought up before but I've been thinking that you could make a new disaster called "war", "blitz" or "air bombardment". It is simply a number of random tiles on the map being "blown up", destroying buildings, industries or whatever else would be on that tile.
I don't know anything about coding, but we already have the demolish command and I could imagine that it would not be difficult to apply it to say 100 random tiles.

Why would you want this? So you'd have to look around your network for random holes? So you'd have to start the game again if your sole coal mine or whatever gets trashed at the start?Wotan wrote:...It is simply a number of random tiles on the map being "blown up", destroying buildings, industries or whatever else would be on that tile...
This would be more irritating than entertaining, even if it was allowed.

Re: New disaster: War?
Here is a way cooler non war related disater.
It's called a Geomagnetic storm.
This is how it might play out
1 year before it might happen the newspaper displays warning.
The year after the warning if it dos'nt happen
If it does TTD Land kiss your liestyle goodbye.
All eletric things cease to work.
Signals fail causing a lot of crashes.
Eletric trains stop in there tracks.
Power is knocked out to the towns and industries
so all ind seases to work.
This could last 1-5 years in TTD time.
Think about it.

It would suck, it is way too long. By that time all your trains would have died or didn't make any profit because they're standing still.dunbrine47 wrote:This could last 1-5 years in TTD time.

And when was the last time some geomagnetic storm took place?.. You could have Coca cola shower in toyland if you really want, and all trains rust and your events take place...
Re: New disaster: War?
Well, the Geomagnetic storm might be translated in an EMP shockwave*... but that's a thing generated from a nuclear explosion. Now, I don't think meltdowns produce an EMP shockwave, so that only leaves one thing... a nuke and that has to do with war, something which is undesirable for openttd.
* An EMP shockwave will fry all electronics within a certain radius of the blast that triggered it.

Re: New disaster: War?
You can also make EMP without setting off a nuke
there are enough scientists studying the effects of EMP without blowing up half the world.

In a span of a game(1950-2050)It either happens once or never happens at all.LordAzamath wrote:And when was the last time some geomagnetic storm took place?

Re: New disaster: War?
And if it happens in 1951, then most people would either dump the game, or load last autosave... A disasters that makes game unplayable for up to 5% of game span (1950-2050) is too severe IMHO. Half a year would be enough.
Just imagine this happens to someone with daylength patch... They'd go crazy...

Re: New disaster: War?
Curious how many ppl think of new disaster, but who actually has them enabled in games?

Re: New disaster: War?
First. Big no from me too.
Second. Big no from developers too (aim sure about it).
Third. You can make a EMP without a nuke or blow the nuke itself up without the EMP.

Re: New disaster: War?
I don't for one. Because the current ones freak me out (I mean... UFO?? Come on!! - I want natural disasters not something that far fetched).LordAzamath wrote:Curious how many ppl think of new disaster, but who actually has them enabled in games?

Re: New disaster: War?
I've got a good disaster.
A black hole, whereby everything in the game is sucked into oblivion and the game is rendered useless. Then it deletes any saved games you might have, so you can't even load it back. Then the game closes and your HDD gets formatted. Then your tower defenestrates itself.

Or.. or... orr
The world could spontaneously blow up and it would destroy everything, including your trains and planes and buses and trucks and towns and you would have the choice of either starting over again or just starting at a blank space where the earth used to be and it would be so cool because you'd just played for like 100 years and then suddenly everything you did was gone sorta like when you were a kid and you'd build these sand castles and then wreck them when you were done pretending you were godzilla or king kong or britney spears or something and you'd smash everything and laugh and go RAWWWRRRR, well it would be sorta like that only you wouldn't get sand down your pants or anything and then maybe we could even include a transition where the game converts from TTD to a space game like Sid Meir's Alpha Centauri or Emperor of the Fading Suns or some cool old-school space conquest game that makes you ask deep deep questions like "Where would we go if Planet Earth blew up?" and then the game would crash because all old games like that were unstable and your tower would defenestrate itself, but before it did that it would pull out a gun and shoot you in the head so if you had this disaster you'd like literally die and then your computer would run away and jump out the window and scream "AIIIIEEE YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE" and crash into a car 30 stories below and kill everyone inside when the computer starts a nuclear fission reaction from the power core you made out of weapons grade uranium and vaporizes 10000 square city blocks and you'd go to heaven and the pearly gates and Saint Peter would be like "Omifgod what the hell did you do, your computer game just killed like 5 million people wtf is wrong with you" and you would go to burn in hell all for playing TTD with disasters enabled.

P.S.
Number of periods used in last paragraph: 1.
Time spent writing that paragraph: 8 minutes.
Sounding like an insane maniac on TTD forums: Priceless... um... Numberless... ?
Re: New disaster: War?
Is there even such thing as floods, or erosion-related landslides near places with water?
A global disaster could be fun though, and i like the idea that the distaster is warned against
some time before it may happen.
An idea though, even though it may not be the easiest to implement:
A brownout on a power plant could result in one/some of the other industries
in the area of the local council could be affected by this. zeroing production for a week or two.
