Are there any additional limits (date, nearest town size, etc) to the fishing grounds?
On a scenario being created in 1920, with an approx 50 square area of water near the edge of the map, it refuses to create any fishing grounds anywhere in that area.
On a separate scenario I made just for trying to find out this, same date, in a similar sized area, again, it refused, regardless of what I tried, changing date, expanding towns, etc.

If it helps, both attempts were made in Arctic.

As you wish. Made using totally unmodified trunk, r17661, the linux generic version available currently (at the time of posting).
All that's loaded are the ECS Vectors direct from Bananas, it's saved right over the body of water I attempt to place the fishing grounds in using the editor.

I've made some special maps and even tried random maps, but got the same problem as you. Because I made no change in ECS Agricultural vector for long, I suppose something wrong in OTTD. I suppose this code does not work as intended.
Could you please make a check and find an OTTD build where it became broken?

I know it was working in r16800, I'll work on trying to find out the exact revision in the morning when I've got some time free. Maybe that'll help for the moment though?

Edit: Interestingly, some random maps generated with the same nightly as the one used for that scenario, (IE from new game on the title screen) seem to have one or two fishing grounds in.

I can't get any. Can you provide a savegame?

i have the ECS chemical vector II beta (27 Jun 2009) and the oil taken to the oil refinery turns into refined product and gasoline. the only problem i have is i cant transport them, because i do not have any vehicle (apart from ships, but this is a desert map!) that can carry it. is there any way to get trains/lorries to haul them, or is it just via ship?
Just doing what I can to help :)

Try adding a GRF that supports new cargos, like NARS, 2CC, etc
George - it seems I'm wrong on the count of the random map fisheries. 0.6.3 seems to work alright, I'm still working forward through revisions to find where it stopped working.

I suppose you should create a bug report at http://bugs.openttd.org/

P.S. Please check if it was r17605

yep, done that, it works beautifully. where do you take the gasoline from the oil refinery? i know to take the refined products to the chemical plant, but what about gasoline?
EDIT: Also, where do you take the dyes form the chemical plant?
Thanks

Gasoline goes to towns, if you have Town/Basic (I think Basic, not Town, but not sure) Vector loaded, then petrol stations will appear in towns, and will accept gasoline.
Dyes are required by several other industries, including the Vehicles Factory in the Machinery Vector, the Factory from the Basic Vector, and the Printing Works in the Wood Vector.

As I remember it was working for 0.7.2. For 0.7.3 I cant make any fishing grounds. For current trunk its not working either. Problem appear before rev. 17633 - will try to check earlier revs.

EDIT: r17605 - game crush when you try to build fishing grounds...

It works alright for me on the revision prior to that one, I think it may be something changed then which caused it. Having not looked at the commit log for what changed, I don't know though.

For r17605 I get error: Unhandled exception at 0x00492875 in openttd.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000004.
For r17600 there is no errors.

Now Yea have easy way to check where the problem is.

The problem is a combination of:
a) ECS Machinery steel mill crashing OpenTTD due to defining duplicate tiles (OpenTTD doesn't like building an industry on an industry). This lead to us preventing the crashes by ignoring (with a small warning) industry layouts containing duplicate tiles.
b) ECS Agriculture having (lots of) duplicate tiles for the fishing grounds. That it previously didn't crash OpenTTD was more luck than that it was designed to hand that.

As such the fishing grounds not working in newer versions is 'merely' because OpenTTD is being more picky/strict about the tile layout in an attempt to keep the number of NewGRF caused crashes low.

ECS Agricultural vector is fixed and will be uploaded soon

George,
Can I ask when/where it's uploaded? BaNaNas shows no change in versions, and as far as I can tell, neither does the download page on your site.
Also, I wanted to ask why the Potash mine and cargo are still on the big schema linked to on the TTDPatch wiki page, if they aren't used anymore.
Edit: Similar question to that, about the Trade Center and Town Supply Center in the Town Vector that I've never seen implemented.

They are not used yet. Same as ship yard. But some day it will change. may be

that never went to public. After some tests I became unhappy with them, so I decided not to put them to public unless I do them better.

My apologies then, I was going by the dates on the page, which was identical to the ECS Agri GRF's date that I already have. I'll d/l anyway, to make sure I have the right one.

Last question for now. Is the ECS Houses GRF still necessary, or has it been merged into Town Vector?
