Screenshots on OpenTTD.org

Post by T-Unit »

I noticed today that there haven't been any screenshots of the game posted on openttd.org since version 0.5.0

Seeing as there are plans to change the website design I thought maybe it was time to add some new screenshots too. I know there is a screenshots part of the forum, but seeing as this is more OpenTTD related then i thought it would be best to post it here for discussion, and hopefully, some new screenshots showing developments since 0.5.0 and some lovely networking by people.

Personally no, as my games aren't particularly pretty. I had just noticed that there hadn't been any new ones for a while, and thought i'd raise a bit of awareness. If i'd noticed those sentences then i would have added them. I also know there are some people's games who are very good looking and show off the features of OpenTTD spectacularly. And seeing we have had a few title screen competitions and discussions recently, this may also catch on.

I have sent to them screenshots twice or so, never with a reply in any shape.

I have received countless screenshots, but unfortunately, none of them were, in my opinion, good enough to be posted.
Maybe i'm too hard? Dunno.
I've answered to a few requests, but... all of them? naaa...
Got a real life to enjoy...
So...maybe try again with real GOOD and jaw dropping ones next time?

OpenTTD and Realism? Well... Here are a few thoughs on the matter.

What'd be the criteria that make a good screenshot then?

From what I overheard somewhere, they should show new OTTD features (not just nice landscapes...). And they should be jaw dropping. ^

Would you guys say a screenshot with custom GRFs and patches would be better then a plain "out of the box" OTTD screen?

I'm not an openttd dev to answer you, but I'm pretty sure the answer would be GRFs yes; patches no. (As the screenshots should represent official OpenTTD and not some customized version.)

I'd agree with that because there was once a screenshot of a patch feature that didn't get into a stable that was advertised as being some stable and that screenshot got modified. I'll leave you with the questions what the feature was and which screenshot was modified.

If you have exacting standards then how about a screenshot competition or something, to get the ball rolling? I think the lack of 0.6 screenshots looks bad, as if nothing has happened over the past few months.

IS that so? Wow... Silly me. Quick, tell me which one is it, so I'll remove it right now.

I fail to see how GRFs would be allowed.
They're thirdparty content, possibly with thirdparty graphics.
They're not included in OTTD.
Effectively the same argument as patches applies.

So false and wrong you are...
Screenshots with GRFs would be good since OTTD can READ/LOAD/MANAGE GRFs.
So it's the possibility of GRFs that would be nice to see. Newhouses, newindustries, etc etc...
It's not about the GRFs THEMSELVES, but about the features of USING them.

As for Patches, it's quite obvious. They are not part of any releases. So, they are not honored.

What about these two? They are shot from the WIP screensaver demo, which is played mostly for eyecandy.

I think enough jaw-dropping screenies don't exist (and can't be done), so there will be 0.5.0 pics forever :)

Can you [somebody] not go and poke through the Screenshots forum here and find some nice ones done in OpenTTD, and ask the authors if you can use them?
