Industrial Giant Development

Post by Zhall »

You may or may not remember me saying that i was making a transport game within gamemaker...

http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=51527Its been more like 5 months and not 1-2, but you can blame school for that one, i beleive i even beat my tutorial production time on this one lol...

Anyway, http://www.megaupload.com/?d=X13FDHW9
I present Industrial Giant 0.74!! Private release

This is a private release for either critique by those who know what their doing coding wise, bug finders, or just screen shot takers..

Its the beginning of a much larger game.

Please excuse the fact that theres no decent pathfinding, no tutorial, and only 1 level.

Press (F1) in game to get a scrawled out tutorial (marginally helpful)

If the pathfinding acts up, try making little road loops for the trucks to swing around on..

Check the known bugs list by pressing (f1) in game before submitting a bug.

Please provide a screenshot of the error sceen if you get a bug.

Try to get $1,000,000 in the fastest time.. without some sort of cheat engine..

Enjoy, didn't want to keep a release waiting any longer than it had too, but some things are buggy because of that :D

If you have suggestions post them here or send them to kippurcat5@hotmail.com

I assure you i will be contemplating adding dragable roads, trains, planes, ships, and masses of more products to the game, and will politely ignore your suggestion if it has already been made.

This proves it can be done with game maker, however unconventional and full of leaks it may actually be.

SO HAH!

Design document released for your viewing pleasure!! :D

Any screens of the game? I'm curious, but having only Macs makes it hard to check it out.

Pressing f1 brings up the help menu and crude tutorial..

Basically the idea is to take raw materials to factories then sell them at stores in cities

I made that clear in a different post

But ill do so again.

I figure this game can go 1 of 2 ways.

Either it can be a clone of the origional which can no longer be found in existance,

or.. it can become a tribute to all that was great about the industrial giant series and improve on it's gameplay.

Im currently all sprites and sounds from a demo i have of the game which i have on a demo disk, thankfully they supplied everything i need to do this :D

Is there any way that people can get involved, I would like to help. I have no knowledge of Game maker (or programming) but could help e.g. writing "Read-Me's" and stuff. Also, I have a pretty large knowledge of HTML, so I could help build a site and forums once it reaches "that level."

I messaged orudge and made a consideration for a forum in the projects section and he said he wants to see how much interest there is in this project before doing so, therefore increasing the discussion here will increase our chances.

while i wont endorse advertising this to your friends yet as it is an early beta that will be one of the things i will need help with.

Some other things i need help with
Making a decent pathfinding system in game maker
Basic photoshop cropping/masking
Ideas/suggestions
Bug testers
Programming critics (to increase performance)

If you want to get onboard PM me and ill give you a task, i already have another team member but no site to work at :/ Which should be solved soon :)

Well, if this is the current (and only) thread for this remake, here is my suggestions:
* Change the name to something unique, like "Industrial Tycoon"
* Add speeds to it (like fast forward, regular, and pause)
* Give it a unique gui, not the old gui. I was thinking one thats more at the top of the screen, with a minimap in the top right, and major build options at the bottom

Thats all for now.

On thing that confuses me about this is you have a top down view on the world so why do you use isometric sprites. I can appropriate it would not be easy to do an isometric view in gamemaker (I'm just presuming it's limited I don't have any actually knowledge on gamemaker) , so why not keep to a single style and use just top down graphics, I think that would give the game a nice charm compared to some other games of this nature...

Also not to say gamemaker cannot do what you need to do but I would suggest a project such as a game which you are taking on would be better written from scratch and not using a game creation program.

Seems a decent enough start, but I can't get my trucks to actually deliver anything, they just turn back at the first bend, and then the AI sprouted buildings round my road so I couldn't build a loop.

Generally speaking I'd like to see what I saw as the real limitation of Industry Giant looked at - the lack of a price system and any notion of product quality in the game, thus meaning that real competition was impossible.

Build a loop around the building. That worked for me.

Capitalism 2 breaks this down in quite a logical fashion.

It rates product based on thier price, quality, and brand.

Certain products rely heavilier on certain factors.

Definantly for multiplayer the retail system would need a rework.

As for Isometrics
Im currently working with spikerocks101 on how to accomplish this, and will begin conversion to it as soon as i complete a few other things. (the origional intention was to do isometrics, but my gmk skills were limited back then, which have since been improved)
