Martin’s adventures in OTTD [tablet version]

Post by Martin »

I thought it was best to start afresh for this since it’s a total new start.

Two pictures from my first game (well, second actually since I fiddled around a bit with one very short game with the original graphics.)

In this one I’ve got
  • Pikka’s UK Railway Set (UKRS2) 8)
  • mph’s British Station Set 8)
First, an AEC Railcar travels along the new line with a shuttle service.

Second and final for now, the train arrives at its destination Frunham. I know it’s a bit dwarfed here but I was intending to run longer trains as well! I hope I’m getting the signalling at least vaguely correct, it’s a bit different from what I’ve been playing.

More to come in a while, possibly from yet another new game since I’m just getting started and I really could do with adding at least some freight stations.

Edit: Altered topic title to make clear which version of the game this is. :)

A new game with the above two NewGRFs plus the addition of Industrial Stations Renewal, I can’t believe how much there is in that set.

So here goes with my first use of that one, an empty wood train about to load at the wood platform - the loco is an 0-8-0 Mineral.

A couple more, first my new wood train having passed through Pluworth station closely followed by a DMU (in fact the DMU was delayed further back up the line waiting for the wood train to join the mainline.)

At its destination, Chindworth Goods Yard, the wood train finishes unloading as the goods train carrying the finished goods is already on its way. Hmm, maybe I’ll end up serving the nearby farm too, eventually. :)

Two more and contrary to what I said about serving the farm, as often happens I’ve gone off in a totally different direction and opened a very long line across much of the map to bring oil to the oil refinery close to my existing network.

Here are two Deltic-hauled oil trains with one setting off as the ship returns to the oil rig.

Some time later on another run (this line is unsurprisingly turning out to be very lucrative :D), one of the two oil trains crosses the mainline on my new line as an express arrives at Pluworth, hauled by a Class 47. The spur connecting my new line towards Pluworth isn’t yet in use but I intend to run goods from the oil refinery to the station at the end of the mainline. I’m not sure my choice of suspension bridge on my new line is entirely prototypical but sometimes I just can’t resist choosing what looks best!

Edit (the following day): I regret to inform you there will now be a slight delay to further screenshots, I’m probably going to start yet another game with further NewGRFs, it’s taking me a while to get back into my stride, it’s a long time since my TTDPatch days! :P

A couple more, probably the only two from this (new) game, now with the addition of Timberwolf’s Stations. :D

A busy scene at Fadhead station: a mainline train leaves the bay platform and another leaves in the opposite direction as a grain train passes through. The DMU in the other bay is still loading (but see next screen.) One further comment on this one: thank God for PBS!

The DMU has set off and arrives at its destination, a very short branch (actually impossible without PBS, as soon as you get two trains in opposite directions they can easily just stop each other.)
Finally, I thought the passengers might appreciate the overall roof with the sea breeze. :P

Another new game, I’d better list all six NewGRFs rather than just saying which additional ones I’m using:
  • Industrial Stations Renewal 1.0.2
  • Timberwolf’s Stations 1.2.4
  • Total Town Replacement Set 3.14
  • UK Railway Set (UKRS2)
  • UK Town Names v1.0
  • UK Waypoints Set v1.1
Evolution of a station:

First, I really wanted to try these one sided platforms (from Timberwolf’s Stations) which are more typical for UK stations, they work really well. Here the full iron ore train crosses the empty one returning. The people in the village can’t really complain about these thundering through, they’re paying for their forthcoming passenger service!

47F05EAC-30E2-4FD3-B61D-C1A9B8B38604.png (1.17 MiB) Viewed 4016 times
Second and final for now, I had a similar urge to try and create the island formation you may get in the UK if there’s two platforms on each side of the station, this is two of the above platforms back-to-back (and I still managed a through line in one direction.) In this one, one of the stopping services calls as an express rushes through in the other direction.

Wow, I just noticed my balance in the second one, I should probably be paying a bit more attention to that in the game.

Another from the same game, probably the first game I’ve really ‘got going’ since I started this thread (as you can see from the more modern trains.)

This is another island station, but this time a ‘true’ island formation where the trains go on the left of the island (the tracks on the right converge.). The DMU and Class 47 formation both stop here but the HST has whizzed straight through. The other thing is I’ve switched to having trains stop in the middle of this station’s platforms, I think that seems a bit more realistic for UK operation.

I thought I’d try something completely different and use some Dutch graphics, so here goes, first my list of NewGRFs:
  • Beach as Industry 1.2.0
  • Beach Objects v1.2
  • Dutch Signals
  • Dutch station set
  • Dutch Town Names
  • Dutch Trainset 3.0.1-XL
  • Industrial Stations Renewal 1.0.2
  • NLHS - Dutch Houses v0.3β/r17
  • Total Town Replacement Set 3.14

(2) Much further down the line, having joined the mainline, the train passes through Dwarsgracht and Burstum station with a passenger train travelling the other way.

(3) Somewhat further on, off the mainline, we arrive at Winkelstraat Oil Refinery where the train to take the finished products away is already 10% full, soon to be full as far as I can remember (although I only took these screenshots last night :P )

Probably at least one more to come, although whether I take this game much further is uncertain as I’ve just realised why I’ve been finding it tricky to choose appropriate trains at times in the late 20th century/early 21st - I haven’t electrified any of the network. Oops.

Edit: Probably also should have said, I love these multicoloured tankers. :D

These latest screen shots gives me some real old-school OpenTTD vibes, back when I was still new to the game.

Heh, in some ways I think I seem to have (somehow) picked up where I left off with TTDPatch all those years ago.

I’ve actually got two final ones from that game.

First, I couldn’t miss showing one of the beaches. I’ve also found the empty tile from ISR handy for surreptitiously extending stations’ coverage (maybe it’s a basketball court under construction  )
The train here is a stopping service (the other two that come here aren’t as short as that one.)

Finally, the other end of the line where these services (and quite a few others) originate. All those services have definitely led to the biggest city growth I’ve had up to now.

Three from my recent Australian-themed game, in particular I really wanted to try some of GarryG’s creations.

First, my list of NewGRFs, I had to split this in two:

Second, my biggest station, Grimshaw Court, with an EMU departing just ahead of a grain/livestock train. You can also (just) see an iron ore train at the top right!

Last one from this game, Marawong and Cardiff Beach stations, the former being so close doesn’t get all that well-served (but they can walk instead. :P ) I love these stations and trains (I just hope I’ve arranged most things realistically.)

Nearly forgot, I added the hot air balloon too, my list of NewGRFs reminded me I’d overlooked it.

I wasn’t going to post any from this game but I thought this busy junction area was worth sharing.

First, my NewGRF list:

The top line was originally freight-only but I decided to open a new station and line since the town was expanding. (There are some electric expresses on the lower electrified line, just not in this shot.)

Maybe it’s just me, but River Bows sounds fairly plausible for an English name considering it’s from ‘Funny English town names’. :)

Just one from my US-themed game, a busy scene at Anchorage and San Bernardino (apologies for the mangling of US geography, I did one combined station since these towns were placed very near on this map, blame the game! )

Here’s one from my sub-arctic game I was talking about, with the US Set, I’ve gone quite a way here (relatively speaking, that is  ) and I am planning to carry on a while.

This is Nunningbury and Puntborough station with a couple of diesel services loading as one of my shiny new Acela HHP-8s arrives; also the goods service at the bottom has just unloaded. As you can see, unlike my last game using these trains (last post above this one), I am firmly moving things into the electric era. Let’s just hope I haven’t missed any more track sections in need of electrification, the first time I tried to run the Acela it couldn’t make it into this station. [I know I could easily drag electrified lines over the whole area but I wanted to leave the terminus platforms and other such lines unelectrified.]

One more from that game, not very arctic—y but I thought the way the city had developed was quite pleasing.

In terms of infrastructure, I wanted to try some wide platforms here, it kind of gives it a quite imposing look I think. Here the DMU arrived first but the two trains left on entirely different lines so the new (even faster) Acela Express had a clear run. :D

Three from my sub-tropical game with NARS, I had to give that a try myself, it was indeed a great set. I don’t think I used to play many sub-tropical games in my TTDPatch days so this was all quite different.

First: Charham has grown tremendously, as well as a lot of passenger trains I am providing food and goods here (but not water.) In actual fact Charham more than doubled in size after this but I like the look of it here.

Second: As a total contrast, the small town of Connville. (I made one change to the signalling after this shot and switched to entry/exit signals on the approach where the crossover is as I realised with the set-up here a train arriving could prevent one reversing.)

Finally: I did it, I actually reached 2050! In actual fact I eventually reached 2053.
