IMSA WetherTech Week 1 @ Daytona

Post by kamnet »

Daytona Weekend kicks off the North American racing season with the 24 Hours of Daytona, and with it comes a new top class in IMSA, the return of the Grand Touring Prototype (GTP), a new class of hybrid electric-gas cars from ACO's LeMan's Hypercar (LMH) and IMSA's Le Mans Daytona h (LMDh). It replaces the IMSA Daytona Prototype International (DPi) class and shares most of the same rules and specs with FIA WEC's Hypercar class, which replaced the LeMans Prototype 1 (LMP1) in 2021.

Here is an overview video of the new class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3EwMOgliqc

And also a more in-depth look at the vehicles and manufacturers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJctWKE ... oyDHTmlke2

2023 ABB FIA Formula E, Race 1 at Mexico City

Post by kamnet »

ABB FIA Formula E attained FIA World Championship status in 2020. It is the world's first all-electric vehicle race. The vehicles are open-wheel cars that run on street circuits around the globe. The season runs 16 races at 11 locations from January through the end of July. The series is unique because it's not the fastest car that wins, but the driver who can best manage the energy in their batteries. The series is dedicated to being a "zero carbon" form of racing, and starts with how the cars and tires are designed, built and presented. More info at https://www.FIAFormulaE.com/

Race 1 was held on January 17th in Mexico City, Mexico.

Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Post by kamnet »

This race is down to the last 30 minutes. Free streaming on IMSA TV outside of the US, it free on Peacock (NBC Sports) in the US. LMP3 is the only race that's pretty much decided with the leader being ahead by 12 laps. Everybody else the top 5 are only separated by a few seconds. GTP class is really hot, these new cars are something! Chip Ganassi Racing running 1-2 for most of this race with Accura engines, but they got a pair of Cadillacs right in their bumpers.

I'm really quite intrigued by the Le Mans "Garage 56". It is an extra slot at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race dedicated to concept cars with new automotive technology. It once hosted the DeltaWing, for example:

This year, they are bringing NASCAR to Le Mans with a rebuilt Next Gen series car. It will be driven by NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson, Le Mans veteran Mike Rockenfeller, and F1 champion Jenson Button.

Of course, I too watched lots of races last weekend ... and precisely the ones you didn't watch, just out of spite

NLS Race 3
https://youtu.be/FEr6qEguMno
By measures of NLS a quiet race. Everybody expected some rain but it stayed dry throughout.

WEC 6h of Portimao
https://youtu.be/pneaNoLZW4Q
Toyota continues to dominate overhyped hypercars, but LMP2 and GT-AM continue to deliver excellent racing. Somewhere in there was an amazing stint by Ferrari junior driver Lilou Wadoux which caught me a bit by surprise as the field was relatively stable (Portimao - not a track made for easy overtaking). Also, almost all green flag racing.

And, okay, this was the weekend before but British GT has started with its racing on Easter Monday.
https://youtu.be/20jj-3UP2oE
I was curious why some of the GT manufacturers used their top level drivers for this Pro-Am series specifically. Good races but, well, Pro-Am. You either like that or you don't.

Really exciting to follow IndyCar this year. Marcus Ericsson definitely making himself a candidate for that championship. Do I think he has what it takes? Maybe. He's very solid, knows how to save tyres, and so far this year has sorted out his qualifying too which was always a struggle.

I'd love to follow IndyCar more, but I can only watch it live on Peacock and they go to freaking commercial every 4th lap.

Very impressive GT field at Monza today. First race of the GT World Challenge series; 3h race.

There's also the N24h Qualifying Race today (but that's just about getting track time) and Formula E in Berlin (not interested, personally).

Really not easy keeping track of everything good ^^;;;

Quite an exciting last 30 minutes of the race, battles between LMP2 and a surprising number of LMP2 ProAm teams challenging. Race highlights at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_Y7YFi2zRI
[+] Spoiler
#34 from Racing Team Turkey in ProAm lead for most of the last 30 minutes, but were forced to pit to change a damaged rear deck. They dropped back in the field 35 seconds, but came roaring back quickly and were able to reclaim the lead from #30 Duqueine Team's LMP2 car and then build a nearly 3 second gap in the last 10 minutes of the race to lock it in. LMP2 ProAms finished 1st, 3rd, 4th, 8th with LMP2 finishing 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th.

#31 Racing Sprit of Leman took the win for LMP3 in 18th position, #16 Proton Competition took the win for GTE in 26th position.

Sweden gets the same video feed, so we frequently get weird cuts of off-track views. The beach, the promenade, birds in the distance, the clouds. And then you realise, either USA is going on a break or coming back from one and they want a nice shot.

For some reason, they often show Felix Rosenqvist's onboard. Far more often than they should for a midfield runner.

SkyUK uses the same video feed, but has an extra commentator that, well, jumps in when the Americans cut off from the commercial with cars running in the background to the commercial that's something else than car related.

IndyCar would be a series I might find interesting to watch but the coverage is just awful so I don't.

Upcoming weekend has N24h (also qualifying before but eh). It'll be live on youtube and elsewhere. Start 16:00 CET.
e: Next month, oops  ... see, that's the issue with all those dates :|

We have proper Swedish commentary for IndyCar, which otherwise rhey only really do for F1. But with two Swedes in IndyCar, and one absolute front runner, I think IndyCar is easily the second most popular form of motorsport on Swedish TV. We don't have a MotoGP culture, and DTM/WTCC/similar haven't appeared relevant for 20+ years.

I still get goosebumps when listening to the last few laps of the 2022 Indy 500 with Janne Blomqvist commentating. He has done F1 since the last 90s for Swedish TV, and has a close personal connection with Marcus Ericsson. He's an absolute professional, shows clearly he has done this for almost 30 years. But when Marcus was about to win, he was barely coherent. My favorite is probably: "It's the finish flag now because it HAS to be the finish flag now"
