What size (pixels) should a sprite be?

What size (pixels) should a sprite be?

Wanted to try my hand at designing a sprite for a CIE 8300 EMU. Should it be a certain amount of pixels?
EN-GB: Smoking like a train since 2015
CY-GB: Ysmygu fel trên ers 2015
GA-IE: Ag caitheamh tobac cosúil le traein ó 2015

note that since this tutorial was made, x2 and x4 "extra zoom" sprites have been added, which obviously need more pixels

That "tutorial" is highly outdated. It always was.
