Is It Acceptable To Use Real Names? Here's Mine

Post by RhapsodyTTD »

Personally, for me, it depends where I am on the internet. Certain websites, especially those with less youth friendly topics and content, I'd never usually use even Rhapsody, my main online username. (I normally use abbreviations in my username depending on the site)
However, the TTF community is very friendly, so I wouldn't mind people knowing my full name and face. As a member of the forums, I'm happy to introduce myself as a person, not as a picture and a username.
My name is Jason Thomas. I'm a Welshborn-Irish game enthusiast living in County Wicklow.
(God damn I haven't opened up like this in years! I'm a social catastrophe offline)

Keep in mind anyone can see this, and Google will index this post so if you don’t want this to be public knowledge, let me know and I can remove it.

I tend to use my real name, or the username “orudge”, almost everywhere.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that this information is not only available to the couple dozen users you have interacted with so far, it is available to all 23,687 members the forum currently has, and also to every single person or bot on the entire internet.

Personally, I am somewhat reluctant to use my real name online, but I have a few places where it is exposed, mostly due to legal necessities. And there are things that I say and do online which I prefer to be somewhat hidden away from HR departments or co-workers looking for ammunition to get rid of me, or who are doing background checks on me. Not that these are major concerns for me at the present time, but fun things like this do happen.

As some of the OG users will remember, especially if they've been to the old TT-F meets in either York, Crewe or London, I'm Adam, and I (currently) look like this, which is a bit different to my appearance at the TT-F meets going back what, a decade now?

That's mad! My best friend's name is Adam too, and you look a lot like his older brother! :D

Indeed so! I’ve sprouted a beard and 5 kids since the 2009 meet… how things change. :)

Not many people know this but.. my real name is actual Geo Ghost...
Or at least, that's what I'm going to say

I only mention my real name (in the only alias realm) to people I know personally or those I've built a friendship trust with online.
Otherwise, I'm just Geo Ghost everywhere.

Most people don't consider my real name acceptable to use. It's pretty convoluted and somewhat lacking in vowels.

Well my name is Christopher, but I've been Chrill for so long around here that I think it's too late to change that.

My profile photo is newish, but I've grown some hair since. Here's a more recent photo, taken as a press photo as I was going to speak at a large eCommerce event here in Sweden back in November. Worst experience ever, but it was still awesome! I'm not fond of speaking in front of crowds, but I did it and I survived!

You can use whatever name you want, real or fictional, so long as you're not pretending to be somebody else.
