OpenTTD NewGRF Competition - January/February 2022

Post by Erato »

OpenTTD NewGRF Competition
We invite you to make a small NewGRF project over the next 2 months. This competition is open for both veterans to challenge themselves, or for a small side project, and newcomers, looking for a place to start.
Submissions are currently OPEN for January/February 2022.
Deadline for submissions is around 10:00 GMT on the 28th of February.

Current competition theme is Head Quarters

Voting is currently CLOSED for January/February 2022.
Deadline for voting is around 10:00 GMT on the 7th of March.

Competition Rules
  • All participants must register an account on tt-forums.
  • NewGRFs should be submitted to this thread. Please make sure your entry is in an "attachment" and not just a direct link.
  • You're allowed to publish the NewGRF for your entry at any time, outside of the competition, but you're not allowed to submit a NewGRF that has been released before the start of the competition.
  • NewGRFs may only be submitted in GRF or TAR format, compilers will produce either of these automatically.
  • Any license is allowed for your NewGRF project, but by submitting it you agree to it being shared by the organisers in this thread.
  • Up to 2 NewGRFs may be submitted, but only if limits have been reached or to separate functions.
  • Entries are allowed to contain multiple types of content, such as trains, tracks and stations, hence why you're allowed 2 files.
  • You are encouraged to provide a screenshot, and/or captions in order to elicit greater voting.
  • Only one entry per participant. Entries may be withdrawn or replaced at any time before the deadline.
  • The competition runs for 2 months at a time.
  • If fewer than three entries are submitted by the end, the competition will automatically roll over to the next month. If after three months (i.e. after it rolled over once), there are still fewer than three entries, the competition moderator will declare the competition a draw, and start the next competition.
  • [New!]All contestants, and non-contestants are allowed to suggest a theme for a future competition. The winner (or in the case of a draw, the moderator) will choose a theme from the suggestions.

The first theme is High Speed Rail.
Feel free to make any NewGRF that you think suits this theme. This can include existing high speed trains, high speed tracks, shinkansen stations, futuristic high speed trains, high speed maglevs, whatever you think fits.
I’m looking forward to what all of you have in store for us.

For High Speed Trains I've gone to pixel-Sweden and created the SJ X2, also known as the X2000. It's a high-speed tilting train capable of 210 km/h (130 mph) and is used on services within Sweden as well as trains to Copenhagen, Denmark. It will be included in my Danish trainset.

Highlights:
  • Instead of magically flipping around when reversing in stations, the train stays put and only the headlights and taillights swap ends.
  • The train is available in two liveries: white, black, and blue from the train's introduction in 1990; and grey from 2005. The livery is updated to the latest version available whenever the train is serviced in a depot — no need for refits and if you want to keep an old livery around, just avoid depots. If also works if you cheat the date backwards!
  • By default, the train uses real-world colours, but there is a parameter to use 2CC colours with the same livery mechanics.
I used Magicavoxel to create 3D voxel objects of each vehicle and then used GoRender to make them into sprites. A big thanks to Timberwolf for creating this toolchain and helping me tune it for 1x zoom sprites. You can check out my project repository (and use it as a base for your own future contest entry, if you're so inclined) on GitHub.

My submission is Dutch High Speed Trains. The Eurostar was missing, the sprites for the ICE3 were bad, and the Thalys had some glaring flaws. I redid them all for this competition. These will soon make it into the Dutch Trainset Addon.

Although, don't mind it. It's gonna be in the Dutch Trainset Addon anyway.

Sliding in just before the deadline like a true procrastinator  I present my take on the theme:

Three Interesting Trains Set

three_interesting_trains.png

It's got everything you could ever need!

- A jet train. 'Nuff said. (earplugs not included)
- A superpointy supersonic maglev which creates a "sonic boom" when it crosses the sound barrier
- A massive nuclear train for hauling ungodly amounts of cargo quickly (Tracks and basic wagons included)
- The best name of any train NewGRF ever

All of them are completely useless, and completely awesome! Fun for the whole family! Try it today!
[+] Spoiler
Introduction dates:
- 'Thrust' XJ-1 - 1957
- Machlev - 2035
- Valkyrie - 2055

Woohoo! I think that's the first time I've ever won anything  Although it seems at least two people voted for me without even trying the NewGRF:

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I should encourage everyone to actually try these NewGRFs first before voting  Unless you're all just sharing files, in which case carry on

Anyway, new theme will be incoming shortly :)

The second theme is Unique Structures, courtesy of Andrew350.
The idea is to make something stand out and be the focal point of a nice screenshot-esque scene. Can be based on real things or made up, dealer's choice.

Feel free to make any NewGRF that you think suits this theme. This can include buildings, stations, statues, objects, etc. Whatever you think fits.
I’m looking forward to what all of you have in store for us.

Lets see if I got this right for this competition .. we want Unique Structures .. so I think windmills and oila nd gas drilling platforms might be in that category.

These are all animated objects which I finished making recently. The Windmill is in my AuzFarmObjects and the Oil and Gas Drilling Platform and the Pumps are in my AuzIndObjects.

Our explorers have discovered something in the rainforest... Can you follow the clues and unlock the treasure?

Also available on BaNaNaS. The source is on GitHub if you want to reverse-engineer and ruin the surprise for yourself  , or provide translations (after you solve it!).

I love this. Very creative. Took me a while to figure out how I was supposed to solve it, but it's a nice little puzzle.
