Fictional European Inspired Train Set (FEITS)

Post by LaRoso »

Hello,

So while looking for new trains for my savegame, I came across many European train sets of existing trains and I got the idea of making a set of fictional trains, that could exist in reality but don't.
Is there something like this already? And if not, do you have any ideas or some unused sprites or even the will to draw some?

Greetings,
LaRoso

Hey,

I don't have any content to offer, but an idea for a vehicle: a Vectron double locomotive (Bo'Bo' + Bo'Bo') comprised of one single-cab Vectron MS (6400 kW) and one single-cab Vectron Dual Mode (2000 kW, both under Diesel operation and under Electrical overhead power). That would be a potent tool for heavy (or fast) freight trains, even when they originate in stations on unelectrified railways. The idea is based on a Railcolor artist impression of the ÖBB "SuperCargoLok West" tender that didn't happen.

The use case of this vehicle would be similar to what Stadler achieved with the Euro Dual locomotive (7 MW electric + 2.4 MW diesel in one 6-axle body), though with a greater peak performance and a bigger performance gap between electric operation and Diesel operation.

Stats (under electric power):
Power: 8400 kW (6400 kW electric from the Vectron MS, 2000 kW electric from the Vectron Dual Mode)
Starting tractive effort: 600 kN
Vmax: 160 km/h
Weight: 180 t

Stats (under diesel power):
Power: 2000 kW (Vectron Dual Mode in Diesel operation)
Starting tractive effort: 300 kN
Vmax: 160 km/h
Weight: 180 t

Fake trains are the best :)

If you use GPL license for your set, then you can use Iron Horse 2 sprites.

Iron Horse is Brit not Euro, but you could chop up sprites to make fake engines.

These might be useful:
  • Revolution: inspired by Vossloh/Stadler Eurolight
  • Relentless: generic Euro cheese shape diesel (Vectron, Traxx, Newag Dragon / Griffin)
  • Sizzler: generic Euro cheese shape electric
  • Fury: box-shape UK electric, of the kind exported to Europe by Floyd etc
  • Triton: inspired by UK class 92, exported to Romania
  • Endeavour: class 66 / EMD as used across Europe
  • Brenner: high speed cheese shape MU, like a UK Pendolino, similar to other high speed Euro units
  • Goliath: small freight engine, like Vossloh G6, Voith Gravita

Sprites are here https://github.com/andythenorth/iron-ho ... phics/pony

Also Horse has lots of wagons. It's quite common for sets to focus on the engines, and miss out wagons/coaches :twisted:

That sounds like a good idea. I will have a look at that. Does that count as a MU? Is it even possible to code a MU with both electric and diesel engines?

Thanks. Will definitely help as an inspiration.

Definitely. I think it will be difficult to find ideas for that, but maybe I come across something. I'm not sure whether to put some generic wagons/coaches or only special ones into the set.

Afaik an MU is one item and thus either electric or diesel but it can't be both...? It would work if I'd make it two separate engines that have to be composed manually although that's a pretty inelegant approach.

I drew the first vehicle. It is indeed a double locomotive, but not a Vectron and also completely Diesel-powered. And it's 2cc
Here it is:

And here are some color variations:

What do you think about it?
imo it looks a bit like a Passenger MU engine
Maybe I should transform it into one...

I like of your idea and that firstly sprite. I as one that definitivelly would donwload and use in games.

Regards some trains, i have these drawings of fictional units that could be usefull to you look as inspiration or even drew them. It's from this page, some Nice ideas to you take a look. It's the liveries part of site.

So I created an electric single engine version of the first locomotive.

Here it is with it's bigger brother:

The next thing is a shunting loco I created. That makes 3 vehicles in total.

With the shunting Loco I tried to step the shading a bit up. I'm not entirely sure if I'm happy on how it turned out.
Lemme know watcha think.

@La Roso

The engine is basic the same that you drawn. Very interesting. One idea for that, you could make a version in push-pull operation.

On other hand, i found on a german forum some interesting engines concepts that could be good for this NewGRF.

A 60s Streamliner TEE high speed electric for passenger service;
Image

Early 70s dual-cab diesel unit - very inspired on DB BR 103 Class
Image

A Express Cab Forward steamer, problaby inspired on 30s Deco style;
Image

A Real proposed for SNCF of a center cab diesel unit for both passenger and freight, from 1961;
Image

Concept art from Henschel from 1965 for a express diesel locomotive to DB, very inspired on US Cab units;
Image

A Fictional 60s High Speed Train if TEE livery - very TGV-PSE inspired;
Image

Imaginary turbine locomotive use the DB VT 11.5 TEE base;
Image

70s High Speed Train inspired on TGV-PSE and ICE-1;

I would not look at it like it was an MU, but rather as a locomotive with 2 bodies.

The Finnish train set has an Sr3 Vectron with a fully functioning last mile diesel (480 hp) capability if you use the Finnish track set. I guess the main challenge would be to make such a vehicle compatible with a wide variety of track sets and their respective electric/unelectrified railtypes.

I must admit, I have actually no clue on how to code a locomotive with both diesel and electric power.

Hello! There is a "Generic European Set" available through in-game content download but I could not find a thread in this forum where it is discussed.

Yes, but afaik that set has only a few existing vehicles covered in many other NewGRFs making it a bit useless, but it got no fake vehicles.

So, as this project's gonna be under GPL License, I've put the code and stuff into a github. Please note, that it is at this moment a total mess, as I'm pretty new to all this stuff. You're welcome to help me, where help is needed and you're also welcome to tidy up the code and files if you got some spare time, as I don't know which files are necessary and which are not.
Anyway: Here's the link: https://github.com/LaRoso/FEITS

This is a big step for me because I'm having always a hard time sharing any of my work, so please be gentle :D

Ah yes, my first ever NewGRF (Some of the vehicles are semi-fake, though I agree the set is pretty useless nowadays and not that well done) Here's the original thread: viewtopic.php?f=67&t=47097
Anyway, this looks very promising and I hope to see more! :D

Am I missing out on something?
I got this in my railtypetable:

Code: Select all

railtypetable {
    Diesel: [SAAN, SBAN, SCAN, SDAN, SEAN, RAIL],
    [...]
}
and for the vehicle I got:

Code: Select all

switch (FEAT_TRAINS, SELF, switch_voctrenacdm_power, current_railtype) {
    Diesel: return 2000;
    return 8400;
}
But the train only has 2000 power on SAAN, nowhere else. What did I do wrong here?

EDIT:
I worked around it and wrote every single rail type there:
