"Unknown planet" conversion

Post by Saskia »

I know, there's already the Mars conversion, but I have an idea of something that's looking totally different  I'd like to replace the toyland, but I think the subtropic climate with it's deserts, water reservoirs and the sawmill, which gets it's wood from single trees standing around, is more suitable for simulation of a unknown planet, than the silly bubble generator of toyland  Tell me your opinion! Anyway, I've started with toyland at the moment. But there are some problems (marked in the screenshot):

1. the locomotive looks off-the-track, when looking NE. Why? I've copied it 1:1 from the temperate climate to a locomotive of the same size in toyland:?:
2. the van's gaps are too large. Is ist possible to make them drive closer to each other?
3. the track's fences are different. They are toyland fences, except in a special diagonal direction. But I've changed nothing on the fences! :(

Next I would know how to rename the vehicles, and add more vehicles later. Is it difficult?

1: alignment of vehicles can randomly mess up. this can be corrected by judicious editing of the NFO file.
2: making the vans closer together can be done, but involves more extensive alterations to the NFO file.
3:No idea

Adding extra vehicles is VERY difficult, and there seem to be only 4 or 5 people who 1: have the knowledge needed for the NFO file editing involved, and 2: have the motivation to put in the long hours.
However, I beleive that there is a tool being produced which will make this a little easier.

One problem with replacing an entire climate is the sheer number of sprites that need changing (measured in the hundreds).

I think that if you want an alien planet, a colony on a rocky planet would be more different from what is already present.

Saskia it is great to see conversion of Toyland (which isn't much popular)

If you like take your time with other Toyland conversions: Japan Project

@mnorman: *hmm* seems I have to learn some NFO-editing. At least the simple things ;) It will be a long way to the unknown planet, but I want to walk it

@Shadow: So you mean I should really replace toyland, and not the tropic climate? OK ;)
The Japan project looks very interesting, but I habe absolutely no clue of how it looks in Japan. I only now the Shinkansen high-speed train, if it is japanese and not chinese  However, I want the unknown planet to look very different to the Mars conversation. It shouldn't be too much futuristic/fantastic, e.g. you should recongnize, that humans built the colony on the planet ;) And it should look more industrial, like in the movie Alien[s/3/4] ... let's see what I do next.

3. The fences are being drawn by the elrails.grf.

If you don't want them and want to get back to the original toyland fences, download the zipfile here, unzip it and only run the nofences_elrailsw.exe inside the Newgrf directory.

Thanks Rob, but then the temperate, arctic and tropical fences would be invisible, right? :?

Not at all.
In the elrailsw.grf that particular piece of fence is being draw over any existing fences.
I discovered that as I tried to delete all the fences for alphanumeric. But if you only run the nofences_elrailsw.exe inside the newgrf directory only the fencepart that is redrawn by the elreailsw.exe, is deleted and thus it can't be drawn over the toyland fence.
Anyway there is also an undofile for it, in case you need to get back to the original elrailsw.grf. :D

Eeeek, yes of course it was overwritten by nothing in fact.
Sorry, use the attached transparent_fence_elrailsw.zip instaed.
Just unzip this into the newgrf directory and run it, no need to undo the other one first.
The other undo you have can however also be used to undo this one.
Better luck this time.

I was still running TTD without any fences, so I didn't check.
But no it doesn't work for me either, and I can't understand why.

But I did it a bit different, and now it works for me, so it should work for you too. :?
I changed that fencepiece in elrailsw.grf into the toyland one.
This means however that you'll get that piece of toyland fence in the other climats aswell.
So keep your original elrailsw.grf somewhere safe, so you can use it if you want to play any of the other climats.
As before run the unzipped file inside the newgrf directory.

I did check it this time so it will work.

Sorry for the inconvenience with those other files before.

ps if it still doesn't work I'll kill myself.

I was too happy to read the whole text :(
... well, then tracks on the planet should have NO fences at all, like snowy tracks in the arctic climate ...

I don't think it's a problem, there are no fences usually in Hungary...Or there are acoustic walls or what'd-ya-call'em to protect the neighbourhood from the noise.
