So you wonder what's going on at Châlons?

Toulon is, after Chateauroux, the second most important station between Cognac and St. Flour and the second of only three go-through stations shared by these largely separated networks.

The electrified branch line from Bourg to Vichy is a refuge for otherwise retired material. The VR Sm2 EMU left main line service long ago, and apart from the triple unit in service here, all of them are stabled in the Chateauroux train yard. The same accounts for the Sulzer Type 2 diesel operating the mail train here.

I really like the style of the network, and particularly the idea of the graveyard...

I was quite surprised to see such big stations. Here are photos of the actual railway stations of Guéret and Aubusson...

Anyway, these screenshots are very good!

New game, old thread!

I am starting part 2 of my screenshot thread with a little teaser. For some reason, this double tracked main line down the mountain was cut off east of Kreuzlingen. Do you want to find out why? Stay tuned...

So now that the teaser is out, it's time to present you my latest game.

I made the transition to OpenTTD CPP h4f8131fc (back when it was released) to try all the awesome features, which, due to bugs, didn't make it into the trunk versions yet. This is also roughly how old my map is. It took quite a few days to get used to the extra features I didn't know yet, this map ended up being a 512x512 one taking advantage of the extra height levels, with the peak being more than 3500 m above sea level. This map has been used online by two friends and me, with the aim of creating an extremely efficient while reasonably realistic looking rail network. Quite a few NewGRFs were thrown out for updated versions, yet so far, no NewGRF-related bugs have been found.

There's a total of 10 companies on this swiss-themed yet generally fictional map (although with German/French/Italian regions), of which two have a special role.

1. EIG/SFI/IAF: (Eidgenössische Infrastrukturgesellschaft / Societé féderale de l'infrastructure / Infrastrutture Autorità federale): Supposed to own all of the infrastructure - thanks to user errors and partially existing necessities, other companies own some infrastructure as well by now. EIG/SFI/IAF is not supposed to have any vehicles at all, it's financed by infrastructure fees.

2. SWISSrail: Largest railway operator active on the network, yet also active on roads. 10 Hovercrafts are also owned by the company. MMC, Company 3, is a 75%-owned subsidiary.

3. Matiatos Maritime Co.: This company, a 75% subsidiary of SWISSrail is the undoubted number one in shipping on this map. Apart from 116 ships, it operates 8 cargotrams.

4. Alpinbahn AG: Second largest railway operator active and largest road vehicle operator active on this map (measured by fleet size).

5. VR-Yhtymä Oy: This company is mainly focused on rail freight activities, earning nearly 60% of its total profit through VR Transpoint, but also operates buses, trucks and a small number of passenger trains.

6. Post.ch: Generally, this company is the mail monopolist

7. LVB (Littauer Verkehrsbetriebe): Supposedly state-owned local bus and train operator, operating out of Littau. Its rail activities span from Rorschach to Auswil, Zürich and even Lausanne.

8. SWISSjet: a small airline, 75%-subsidiary of SWISSrail

9. AlpinAir: yet another small airline, 75%-subsidiary of Alpinbahn AG

10. InterCityBus: a small long distance bus operator

The - admittedly - ridiculous recent history of operating profit. The massive dent was caused by several jams on the rail network caused by a combination of too cheap outsourcing of infrastructure works in MP (20-tile electric train: stop at the far end? Better unelectrify the last tile), overall congestion and partially poor design.

More technical details of the map and part 1 of our guided tour.

[NewGRF list] Since there are interferences in the gauge width: In this game, it's pretended that
1) versions of all rail vehicles used in these sets fit in the same track (1435 mm) and loading gauge, with narrower passenger trains employing extendable doorsteps like the Bombardier Talent 2
2) versions of all electric rail vehicles for 15000V 16.7 Hz AC exist
3) all locomotives exist with the same rail safety systems allowing a simultaneous operation on the entire network
4) all conventional trains are equipped with compatible brake and coupler systems
5) Overhead lines are mounted so high that double stack container trains fit in below them. This shall be the excuse for SWISSrail's army of freight trains comprised of Hector Rail 141s pulling double stack container trains out of a factory in Lancy.

5 - Giubiasco.png
We are beginning our tour of the map in the Italian part of the map - in Giubiasco, to be precise. Giubiasco is the southern terminus of a small branch line which is also the only local passenger rail transport franchise that was won by VR. VR operates this line with two trains consisting of six FIAT 710 'Svedjanin' railcars (Kalmar/FIAT Y1) each (from the Serbian train set).

Departure boards

Wow, what an awesome little feature! Unfortunately, though, with the builtin vehicle names, they look pretty stupid - I mean: who - as a passenger - will care about what is Train 1, 2 or 154 of a company, other than railfans? Result: I thought up a system I forced upon nearly every passenger train active on this rail network - oh, did I mention that I really dig shared schedules and the adjustable day length factor (that I have set to 4)?

S-Bahn: S (company number)+(S-Bahn network number counted across all companies)+(3-digit train number) <- not quite happy with this system
Regional: RB (company number)+0+(3-digit train number)
RegionalExpress: RE (company number)+8+(3-digit train number)
InterRegioExpress: IR or IRE (company number)+(500+train number)
InterCity: IC (company number)+(3-digit train number)

So - what will these look like? Here are a few examples for you:

A very interesting scenario.

Because this station is unsymmetrical, it is not 100% suitable for attaching to itself. I should really provide some modifications to make this look better.

Thanks, Michael. The asymmetry: it takes a moment or two to realize that at first sight - it could be worse. ;)
