[OTTD] Lrd's screenshots of DBSet in Sweden
I've been playing this "game series" ever since I bought TTO for the (discounted) price of 30 DM some time in the 90's, and I just keep coming back to it (now OTTD with YACD for cargo destinations). So, after years of just reading this forum (in particular OTTD Development and, of course, Screenshots), I've decided to have a go at my own screenshot thread. I really enjoy some of the other screenshot threads here, especially the ones with the more "realistic" games and <=800x600 images, so let's see if I'm able to contribute a bit myself
My current game is on a 256x128 map using three main NewGRFs: the great Swedish Houses, the equally great DBSet and the nice NewStations. The landscape has been auto-generated, but cities and industries have been manually placed. The game started in 1923; here's an overview of the map "today", which is 1961:
The two main cities are, of course, Stockholm (pop. 12225) and Göteborg (pop. 3376), with other important towns atm being Linköping, Jönköping, Kalmar and Borlänge. Although the company initially made its money with freight (without destinations - with YACD, starting with passengers is almost impossible), let's focus on passenger services first. The current passenger "mainline" is between Stockholm and Göteborg via Linköping and Jönköping (the almost parallel line via Norrköping and Falköping is mainly a freight line with only slower, local passenger service). Here's Stockholm:
As you can see, Stockholm is really, really big (for this map and my playing style, that is), and has, by now, 4 stations that are connected with a ring line, whose two EMUs you can see on the bottom. Capacity on the ring line really needs to be increased, but adding the necessary passing places is almost impossible since the citizens currently cannot be persuaded to accept vast construction efforts inside town.
Stockholm S, the southern station, is served by direct trains to Kalmar, one of which can be seen on platform 3 (the beautiful BR05 being hidden by the station building, though), as well as local trains to Kalmar, Södertälje and Västervik. Stockholm C is the endpoint for local trains from Linköping via both the passenger and the freight lines as well as the express trains to Göteborg via Linköping and Jönköping. One of them has just left Stockholm C and can be seen steaming out of the screenshot in the top right corner.
At the same time, a train on the same line has just left Göteborg for Stockholm:
Göteborg can't compete with Stockholm for size, but it's still the second most important city on this map
Its three stations were originally connected with a ring bus line (let's see if I can find some historic photos of that later), but there was a point a few years ago when they were so outrageously overcrowded that construction of an urban railway was started; unfortunately, the city council changed its mind about the project before Göteborg C and Göteborg V could be linked, so it's still uncompleted at this point.
Aside from the express to Stockholm, local trains to Jönköping as well as to Halmstad (via Varberg, that's the track leaving off the right side of the photo) start/end at Göteborg C. Göteborg V is used by a railbus line via Skövde to Jönköping as well as the curiously routed local train that can be seen in the picture, which goes to Göteborg C via Borås, Skövde and Lidköping.

Re: [OTTD] Lrd's screenshots of DBSet in Sweden
For today, let's follow the two express trains to their next stops. Here's the one from Stockholm shortly before arriving at Linköping:
This is quite a busy moment: The railbus to Gränna via Motala has just left, express train number three is departing towards Stockholm from platform 1, and the local train to Stockholm via Katrineholm and Uppsala is waiting on platform 4.
Meanwhile, in Jönköping, our train from Göteborg is arriving while express train number four is leaving:
You can see that Jönköping also has a small urban railway running between Jönköping station and Jönköping Centrum. The railbus service to Göteborg via the freight line terminates at Jönköping Centrum; the through track parallel to that station is, at this time, only used in case of diversions.

Here's some more photos from the Stockholm-Göteborg passenger line:
First, we see a local train coming directly from Stockholm stop in Uppsala, with an express train about to drive through:
City councils seem really fond of building bridges, it seems, and Uppsala is no exception...
The next stop of our local train, and already the last stop before reaching its destination Linköping, is in Katrineholm:
At this time, this line of local trains is served by two VT-08 DMUs, the second of which has just left Katrineholm for Uppsala in the opposite direction.
Since we've already seen Linköping, let's jump to the junction at Lidköping, close to Göteborg:
The passenger mainline runs from the bottom left (where you can see a local train on the Jönköping-Mariestad-Lidköping-Göteborg line) to the top right, while the tracks behind Lidköping provide a connection to the freight line which is mainly used by a few heavy coal trains to Tranemo power station, which can be reached via the tracks leaving our photo on the bottom right side. Those tracks also provide the main connection between Göteborg and Borlänge; in fact, the long-distance "local" train you can see waiting for the passage of the express from Stockholm is on its way to Borlänge via Tranemo and Skillingaryd. At the moment, two of these VT-08s provide the only connection between Göteborg and Borlänge, but adding a direct "express" connection has been under consideration for a few years already...
Re: [OTTD] Lrd's screenshots of DBSet in Sweden
Let's follow one of the coal trains I mentioned for a bit. Here's one of them passing through Falköping, with an empty one on the way back to Gränna for loading:
Falköpings Gruva station has been built for the future transport of iron ore, but since the only steel mill near Huskvarna is not yet connected to our network, it remains unused.
Busy time near Skövde:
Our coal train is now on the connecting track to Lidköping, while we see the two railbuses serving the towns along the freight line between Jönköping and Göteborg meet in the bottom left. The ring train Göteborg C-Göteborg V has just left Skövde towards Borås and Göteborg V.
The coal unloading station at Tranemo had originally been built for coal trains coming from the south, so our train from Gränna has to take a bit of a detour:
One of the old coal trains delivering coal from the mine at Värnamo can be seen as well. In order to get back to Gränna, our coal train will have to turn around in the auxiliary station "Skr R" after unloading at Tranemo Kraftstation. With a weight multiplier for freight of 6, the three V-140 diesels are barely able to get their coal trains over the one-height-level slopes on their way in case they have to wait at a signal.
Coincidence: The railbus shuttle between Tranemo and Ambjörnarp is also visible in the top left; in Ambjörnarp, there is a guaranteed (timetabled) connection to another railbus to Landeryd (via the track just visible on the top right).

Re: [OTTD] Lrd's screenshots of DBSet in Sweden
A few years have passed, and the network has been expanded quite a bit:
First, Göteborg's urban railway is now complete:
The Landeryd-Ambörnarp-Tranemo line has been extended to Nässjö:
Landeryd-Nässjö is served by two railbuses; one of them can be seen on its way to Nässjö next to the forest. The old local train waiting at the station has been recycled from the Kalmar-Borlänge route, which got new trains, and now serves Jönköping-Huskvarna-Nässjö. Nässjö also has a bus connection to Borlänge, thanks to a tunnel under the massive ridge separating the two towns.

Re: [OTTD] Lrd's screenshots of DBSet in Sweden
The trees from Nässjö forest are hauled to the sawmill at Ödeshög via Huskvarna:
(top: to Jönköping, right: to Nässjö, bottom: to Ödeshög)
The area between Huskvarna and Ödeshög is dominated by its industries:
(top: to Huskvarna, left: to Linköping, bottom: to Åtvidaberg (under construction))
Not only does the sawmill produce goods for the city of Jönköping, but the SSAB steel mill now regularly receives heavy iron ore trains from Falköping. The steel it produces is shipped to Motala factory via Linköping's new freight bypass:
If you look closely at the map and the photo of the industrial area near Ödeshög, you'll see that new tracks have also been laid from Kalmar to Åtvidaberg, with a single-track branch on to Uppsala/Stockholm. The connection between Åtvidaberg and Ödeshög is one of the last pieces missing in the SJ network; once that is complete, iron ore will be delivered from the mine at Kalmar/Västerås to SSAB in Huskvarna as well, new semi-fast trains will be introduced between Kalmar and Jönköping/Göteborg, and new screenshots will follow

Nice shots Lrd!
Re: [OTTD] Lrd's screenshots of DBSet in Sweden
It's 1979, and while the network has not changed that much during the past ten years...
...with the only real addition being the completion of the Kalmar-Jönköping line between Åtvidaberg and Ödeshög, which now allows one of the (IMHO) most beautiful trainsets, VT-11 (BR601), to connect Kalmar to Göteborg via Jönköping...
...the services offered on this network have seen some drastic improvements, in particular on the passenger mainline: The ageing BR01-based express trains (130 km/h max) have been replaced by brand new TEE trains with BR103 locomotives (200 km/h max):
Since creating properly synchronised timetables is still extremely cumbersome in OpenTTD, the local trains between Stockholm and Linköping have also been upgraded to 160 km/h and extended to Jönköping in order to cause less interference with the new TEEs. One of them can be seen in Katrineholm station on the photo above while it is being overtaken by one of the TEEs.
