[WIP/REL] Zoidberg's Shay and Narrow Gauge Stuff 8/13/10

Post by Zoidberg »

UPDATE 7/9/11

Update includes 4 new narrow gauge cars: log car, box car, passenger car, combi car. Log car and boxcar are done, passenger car and combi need some tweaked graphics, but are quite useable. Cars have the prefix USNG. I believe the shay is under Shay Balu.

Name: Shay Baluster Class
Filename: SHAYBALU
Dates: 1900-1960*
Weight: 50 Tons
Power: 700 HP
Max Speed: 25 mph**
Reliability: 120%

*While Lima Locomotive Works stopped Shay production in 1945, with almost 1,500 B Class Shays built, they were fairly easy to come by on the second-hand market.
**In reality most Shays could not go above 15 mph, but that's just too slow for Lomo to make money.

(Hopeful) Plans for the future:
*continued development of more Shays
-3-truck Shays
-weathered textures
-engineer and fireman figures
*additional steam types e.g. K-28s and K-36s
*additional narrow gauge rolling stock
-lumber cars
-passenger and mail cars

-other freight cars

This update should .dat should be able to replace the old one without any problems, but I couldn't test it because I had to reinstall LoMo during development.

Thanks to everyone who has expressed interest in this project and has given helpful advice.

Animation with shays is worthless, I tried it, and you could not see it even when grossly exagerated, good work though :)

rdrdrdr is right. unfortunately it looks to me anyway that there is no moving parts what-so-ever locomotion has swallowed up more talent, But I really like it still, I am doing a 100 year scenario using just it.

Yeah. I did a test render of it more in standard gauge (as if it had always been a standard gauge loco) and it was a lot more visible, but way unrealistic. And I've encountered a memory access violation again about 2 years into a scenario with three of these locos, so I'm not sure what's causing it.

I was hoping for someone to make a NG scenario...it just isn't competative with ST because the speed is so restricted. Let me know if you'd want to work on something together, I can make some custom cars and a few more locomotives.

I haven't finished my California challenge, the map is really mountainy, If you can make a good logging car, we could pair it up as a 1900 logging challenge?

looks great for a first try, :D, but you deffinatly want to depixilate it some, I know tatto did a good job with his stuff, ask him about it
also you may want to check out diagonal narrow gauge mod

Thanks, though it's my second LoMo mod. I made a CH-53E helicopter earlier. And I'm currently re-rendering the sprites (I figured out that I can change the type of AA in blender). But I'll look into his stuff to compare. As for the diagonal track, thanks for informing me, looks neat.

Thanks so much for the update! When I loaded it up, I have to say that it was blurry as all heck. This should clear things up. (<--- Ha ha. Stupid pun.)

New Objects

Post by Zoidberg »

I've already made a narrow gauge passenger car, a lumber car, and a boxcar. I'll probably have a train-car pack ready by the end of the week (maybe earlier...I haven't decided what to add). So you all have that to look forward to. And I've found one more issue with the Shay, which is just the location of the smoke effect being just a tad far back, so that'll be updated with the pack as well.

Thanks for the positive feedback and let me know if there are any more issues to fix.

Its really good now, but I would just add one more thing, Although in real life it didn't a rack rail in the game it doesn't recognize that the shay could handle the extreme grades, so i would just add a rack rail speed, so it could handle the grades more than a normal train.
