Mysterious Russian OpenTTD 32bpp Graphics Site??
Hi all,
I did a google image search today for "openttd" (was trying to find a main menu screenshot) , and I found a rather large number of 32bpp screens. I clicked on a few and many of them pointed to a thread with links to a site in Russia...
http://www.compatdb.org/support/printto ... f_ttd.html
I can see some shots in that thread for stuff I thought was unfinished, or even stuff that I've never seen before! Is it possible that there are people out there making 32bpp graphics independently?
The thread points to...

There seems to be a fair bit of activity here.

Re: Mysterious Russian OpenTTD 32bpp Graphics Site??
It is possible that Sergej_S stolen GeekToo's extra zooms, and didn't even mentioned that it was done by GeekToo. Just quickly looked and found a lot more graphics and GeekToo's version.
@EDIT: Here's thread. I think third post or something: http://openttd32.org/forum/showthread.php?t=327
But whatever we can't do anything about it I think. Just ignore it.

Old story. If you check carefully you will see that there are only a few graphics in Sergej_S's web page that are not posted here.
Some people prefer not to post here, but that is the exception to the rule. And often if there is something new that is really nice there Sergej_S will advertise it here too.

Except he was banned from these forums about a year ago for continually appropriating other people's work.athanasios wrote:And often if there is something new that is really nice there Sergej_S will advertise it here too.

In brief, he is propably still using the previous 32bpp extra zoom branch and graphics created for it. This is officially dead since trunk OpenTTD started supporting 32bpp graphics.

And here I was, wondering why I hadn't seen said user in awhile. I admittedly found him rather amusing due to his... behavior.PikkaBird wrote:Except he was banned from these forums about a year ago for continually appropriating other people's work.athanasios wrote:And often if there is something new that is really nice there Sergej_S will advertise it here too.

*checks page*
Hahaha, new posts from this month. He's indeed still using the old branch with extra zoomlevels. >_>

According to GNU, stealing other peoples work and saying as their own is illegal.

In Soviet Russia, GNU obeys you!

He's no kid from what I recall... Looked quite daddyish to me...
Oh yeah... and don't mistake GNU with GRU... might be dangerous.

You'll also notice that he's nicked the basic structure and descriptions of various forums from here for his site, as well as various pages from my TT Station. When I e-mailed him about it, his arguments were basically "ah, but if you look up these words on Google, there are thousands of results" (conveniently ignoring the fact that only his site has the *exact same words*). But anyway, that's another kettle of fish...
Re: Mysterious Russian OpenTTD 32bpp Graphics Site??
Hack him?
Is it legal what he's doing? I mean, he's nicking things made by others, and I don't think any of us gave permission to do so.

Re: Mysterious Russian OpenTTD 32bpp Graphics Site??
Mmm, my first thought too, but really, let's not do that, and put our energy in descending to his level of ethics.Darkmast49 wrote:Hack him?![]()
It sure isn't. I see my extra zoom patch on his site, and graphics of Ben Robbins and others. In my case, I did get a PM from him, whether it was OK to put the patch on his site. I ignored it, but that does not bother him: in his opinion, when you don't explicitly forbid, it's OK. In my book, only explicit allowance is OK.Darkmast49 wrote: Is it legal what he's doing? But I'd say, just ignore him. Lots of his stuff is outdated, or not working anymore. So the real fans will find their way to 'our' forum. ( I don't write Russian, or else I would be tempted to put some posts on his forums to point his users in the 'right' direction.
If we manage to continue creating high quality stuff, that will attract the best audience, so that's where we should put our efforts in IMO.
And if he unexpectedly manages to create a very good zoomed in patch, I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I published it here ( under my own name of course....

The only thing that was really cool was the vehicles on slopes, but it was a bit erroneous. Now I don't know if he or a member of his forums coded this, but it is a pity to start a war with them and miss such a nice feature. A must patch to be included in trunk.
