How about different flora for different areas? More conifers up north, different trees in the east and the west, either conifers or palms in the south? That's make it easier to keep track of the geography of larger maps, when there's coastline, city names, who's active where, and... the trees.
Farmland textures could be divided similarily, some types in the north, some in the middle, some west, some east, some south.
If including code for map generation to take that into account, it shouldn't be hard to use different trees at different elevation, and increased probability of rocks further up.
Furthermore, with slight graphical modifications/additions, the grass/ground could have different colors in different areas. Different buildings in different areas. This would make the overall navigation easier when you recognize a particular building style and color scheme of a particular region.
Regional differences

Re: Regional differences
we already thought to make the map divided in different climates: alpine on north and south, temperate on middle belts and tropic in the middle like:
ALPINE
TEMP
TROPIC
TEMP
ALPINE
(and maybe toyland in a corner
)
so the terrain changes, not only the flora

Re: Regional differences
There was an other idea discussed (in e-mails with Csaboka). As Csaboka mentioned, it is theoretically possible to have desert and snow on one map, because desert and rain forest data already stored for all landscapes.Wolf01 wrote:we already thought to make the map divided in different climates: alpine on north and south, temperate on middle belts and tropic in the middle like:

All this should be managed with GRFs.
In expanding of this idea (much more work of cause, because it introduces new objects), there might be the possibility to add several types of rainforests and deserts with different behaviour for example.
Re: Regional differences
what about splitting the map up in different countries?
with border lines, and border taxes?, different prices, somehow inplement some more inflation, different currency, currency trading...
and of course what you mentioned with the climate differences...
if the country idea could be made somhow, then it could be quite cool to make senarios, with the ability to make the map far more interesting...

Re: Regional differences
I really like the idea of making borderlines would make the game even more
interesting, and about the idea of different climates well I really like that idea
to but in the last MiniIN that was released there was allready snow in the temperate climate
above a certain snowline... And I thought it was very nice but I was playing with the stolen trees
and once above that line the default trees begane to appear... but I guess this problem
has been fixed so this could be a very nice and promissing feature
