In the late-game, most of us have huge amounts of cash. Why don't add disasters that will make you loose money.
For example an all out company strike that will stop all youre vehicles for a number of day's and raises their basic maintenance cost, because youre company must increase the loans (?i don't know the exact word for this?) of it's employees.
or what about an fraud case, like the one Ahold sufferd a few years ago, they almost whent bankrupt because of it.

I think it's a nice idea, but i fear that it would destroy the basal gameplay.
In order for this to work, it really should be well balanced.
Maintenace is high enough already, and it would really bring down a company
if the unreasonable employees start craving more money.

that is the problem: huge amount of money and just non-sense construction to use it. ever if I want to create a bus network to serve the most remote villages (in the spirit of the game) I risk to downgrade my rating because the service is not rentable enough...
how about to create the "community services" or "non-profit services"? e.g., I would like to create an airplane's fleet that will fly free just to serve hospitals in various cities and the running cost will be at my charge. same thing for buses, I could create ambulances linking the villages to the major cities. also, I could create a passenger bus service free-of-charge just to serve a remote community, to transport the old (and poor) grand-mothers in the city to visit their sons...
I believe that this would be in the spirit of the game (a transport service) and would add more fun for the players.

about the rating by the local authority you're absolutely right.
I don't understand the sponsorship: if you mean that my company gives the money to local authority and this one will organize the "community services" I don't agree. I want to organize my-self the network, to buy vehicles, to build stations, to set paths...
local authorities could make appeals to "community services" like they already do for subsidies...
