creating multiplayer server

Post by r00t_transit »

Hi all,
I'm trying to set up a server for some friends (internet) but I can't get it working.
I have a WinXP machine and I'm behind a router. Ive opened all ports for OpenTTD on my firewall (TCP/UDP)and opened the default port (3979) on my router for both TCP and UDP. I've set firewall and router to accept packages travelling both directions.

Now in the command line I typed: openttd -n <my_WAN_IP>:3979
OpenTTD starts up but it says: "The server didn't answer the request".
Even when I try my local ip (10.0.0.3) I have a no-go.

Does anyone know what is going wrong here?
Any help is appreciated!

How have you started the server? Your client and router might be fine.

Ehm, I assumed that this line would start the server, but I suppose then it's used to connect to an existing server..?

openttd -n <my_WAN_IP>:3979

I'll do some more testing while setting up a server in-game, with the GUI. When I tested this before with one of my friends, he said that the server info box just displayed "offline". Maybe he'll be able to connect via commandline..

Server connection problems

Post by Mr.Killer »

Hi,

Sorry to bother you guys in this topic, but i think the answer came a bit too early for me.

As a lot of people i'm trying too to start a server on my WXP and/or W2003 server using the OTTDMiniIN r6947, but this starting option -d and the ingame 'start a server', does not work as good, as it works only for the machine it starts on.
All other pc's within my LAN will eventually see this server but they cannot connect to it properly, till the actual connection starts, I get these messages: On my server "network savedump failed", the server is crashing at this point, and on the client "connecting..."
No connection and the server is gone!.
I think this networkgaming is not as stable as it's supposed to be...

Anyone with an idea?
Or do i have to wait till the next gen version releases?
Bla bla, and may the force be with you!
Never knew I was gonna say that! ;-)
