SETI@Home, If Not, Why Not! ?

Post by HPC:Factor »

Stand by for some bad excuses.

If your not running SETI@Home, why aren't you running it? You should be!
Whats your computer doing when your not infront of it... using electricity I bet!, if its not using electricity.. and its on, I want to see your computer!. :!:

Anyone who can't come up with a Moderator approved excuse  can download it here:

Omni and I are sending out the call to all those PC's sitting collecting dust while your at work, school, or just in the kitchen!
You could find proof that Alients exist on your own PC!.

This isn't just about Science, its about National Pride, about Pride in your forums!

Do I sound convincing at selling SETI?
Oh well, so, whats your excuse?

You don't really sound convincing, and I doubt that there are aliens sending out radio messages (I believe more in lasers because they are a lot faster). But I do run Seti@Home just because it is nice to do something with your spare CPU.

well i would say that the talking of aliens is going a bit far, you should cover it by something else, like discovering new galxies or something like exploration purposes, personally i do seti but i wont believe in aliens until proven wrong.

I wish I could afford that, it just ticks me off, especially on XP, cuz I like to have my desktop and my startmenu my way, so whenever someone else installs something I have to go to the effort of removing it from all users and adding it to everyone but me, and doing the same with removing stuff I put on. We had a massive palava when Word "went missing" (I tidied it up into a folder clearly labled "Microsoft Office") - it took my dad 2 reinstalls to "find it" again. I dunno why all the desktops and whatever are shared now, what possible advantage is there?

There was an option ... where was it ... hmmm you could change there if all users use one desktop (menu start, my docs) or everyone has got other .... it was in Control Panel -> Users .. (I'm not sure)

Well we do all have out own My Docs, and we do have different desktops and start menus if you access them through my computer, or if you install "special" software that doesn't screw up.

Well, I could get it, just a few questions:
1 - How much does it force you to use it (like is it something that can be hidden away and then just loaded or does it always sit in the system tray etc).
2 - Can it be set to run with only spare resources in the background (eg, if i left it runing then switched user, would it slow down)
3 - There were a few more things which I can't remember so they can't be very important,

I use SETI Driver =)

If you want it completly hidden, then use SETI Hide
Google around for it.

And yes, SETI@home only uses spare computing power (and that is mostly 99-100%), and 14-15 megs of ram.

My S@H computers:
1. AMD AthlonXP 2000@2200, 256MB RAM
2. AMD Athlon 1400, 256 MB RAM
3. AMD Duron 1200, 256MB RAM
4. AMD Duron 800@950, 256 MB RAM
5. Pentium II 400@448, 128 MB RAM
6. Pentium II 300@337, 196 MB RAM
7. Pentium 166 MMX, 64 MB RAM

lynsey, you can run SETI@Home as a screen save if you want. That way it uses absolutly 0 resources untill the screen saver is activated. Then you can have it running all the time, and it'll make use of what's left of your resources.

Your options are a Graphical Version, with the screen saver. Or the Command version, which isn't as pretty, but lets you customise it more using batch scripts or third party programs like seti driver & seti hide.

Omni's total is 2766, because Omni and I create accounts for each of our computers, keep our average accurate
