Combined American Signal Set
Moderator: Graphics Moderators
OK, I have updated the US Set website with the new version.
http://www.as-st.com/ttd/newusa
I have also updated the Readme, with a longer explanation of how the parameters work. PikkaBird, please read this and correct any mistakes I made. Also, can we increment the version number so it's not always 6? I'd say this should be 6.3, or something like that.
http://www.as-st.com/ttd/newusa/USSignals_Readme.htm
If anybody would like to post screenshots, I'll put them on the website - although since the site is for the US set as a whole, they'd need to have the US trains in them.
On a totally unrelated question, PikkaBird, is there any possibility that you'd be willing to fix the coding of the US Town Names so that can be released? For a long time there were bugs in that system, but I believe it's all set now, so it shouldn't be too hard. I have the existing buggy GRF here:
http://www.as-st.com/ttd/newusa/files/ustowns.zip
Thanks for your great work!

Oh, very nice! I'll grab them and upload them, if I've got room on my server, otherwise I'll archive them until the next time I can clear stuff out...

It looks fine. There is no version number in the grf file, so change the number on the website to whatever you like.krtaylor wrote:I have also updated the Readme, with a longer explanation of how the parameters work. Edit: oh, you seem to have the pre-signal indicators mixed up. They are:
Horizontal yellow = Presignal entrance
Vertical yellow = Presignal combo
Vertical white = Presignal exit
These are the same indicators as the default signals.
I have actually been thinking of making a US-style town name set (particularly for sub-tropical). I'll have a look at that grf and see what I can do.On a totally unrelated question, PikkaBird, is there any possibility that you'd be willing to fix the coding of the US Town Names
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the GRF standard does allow you to encode a version number in the GRF file itself. TTDXC gets one from somewhere. If that's so, then I'd expect you'd just have to find that right spot in the file, and change it from 6 to 6.3.PikkaBird wrote:There is no version number in the grf file, so change the number on the website to whatever you like.
I'll make the other changes to the Readme shortly. Thanks for looking at the Town Names!

Oh, that 6 is the graphics version. It actually means what versions of TTDP it will work with, it's not an arbitrary number or an indication of how many revisions of the grf have been released.krtaylor wrote:Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the GRF standard does allow you to encode a version number in the GRF file itself.
Andrex, in his infinite wisdom, thinks that the graphics version is something that Joe User needs to know. Never you mind the hundreds of other things that Joe doesn't need to know; the graphics version is obviously vastly important than ... Oh, I don't know ... A functioning config parser, maybe? (Yes, I am aware that TTDXC's config parser works now. But the graphics version was reported before the parser failed in the first place.)
This, of course, leads Joe to believe that the version number is something that is actually meaningful to him, and (quite reasonably) he assumes that this is a version number for the file itself, when, in fact, it is the version of the NFO language that the author used. This is a distinction he probably doesn't even want to know exists, and definitely doesn't care about.
There is such a thing as the Luxury of Ignorance, Andrex.

To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Yep. The more complexity is camouflaged, the more end users there will be. We can't all be patch developers...DaleStan wrote:This is a distinction he probably doesn't even want to know exists, and definitely doesn't care about.
In any case, on comparing the readout from various GRF sets, some of the other US sets have their version number and date in their name. I'm not sure if the date is necessary, since either the date is stored elsewhere in the GRF or TTDXC is reading and displaying the file date, but putting a version there would be nice in the next version.

FYI, the set version and the release date shown in the set description (as well as GRFCrawler, ReadMe's etc) has nothing to do with the inner workings of a graphics set. The set and the Patch couldn't care less about it.... set version and release date ...
Why have them in the first place ? If a player reports a problem, then this information is needed to work out where the problem is. The player may have used a very old and outdated version. If that info is not available, then players are excused from criticism, when they say ... "I've used the latest ..." ... because they cannot tell what version the set is and how old it is.
Also, the release date tells how old that GRF actually is, thus players are able to make their own judgement when they try to use a new patch feature and the set (supposed to be compatible) does not work, because it is already 12 months old.
That is why every single set should have a version ID and a release date.

# Pre-signal exits: vertical yellow plaque on the signal pole
# Combo signals: vertical white plaque on the signal pole
It should be:

Re: Combined American Signal Set
Giant 16-year bump, but I'm trying to use v1.1 from Bananas in JGRPP v0.54.4, and when I go to set parameters I get none at all (just the generic "Number of parameters" parameter, and the game crashing when you set it to non-zero and attempt to change one of the spawned parameters).
Where can I change the GRF parameters that isn't game-crashing?

Re: Combined American Signal Set
Hmm, it's been such a long time and an awful lot of the supporting structure has changed. Which version of the game itself are you using? Perhaps they've changed how parameters are set?

Re: Combined American Signal Set
I'm using JGRPP v0.54.4, which (according to release notes) based off of trunk commit 3a03a12a9c460918e81af96cca55399b60064261, which corresponds to OpenTTD v13.1 or v13.2.
Manually editing openttd.cfg is certainly possible, still.
EDIT: Editing openttd.cfg manually to have 3 parameters as mentioned in the readme works.
