Swings and Roundabouts...

Post by Dave »

Or rather, just roundabouts.

I don't know how common they are on the European Continent. Obviously the road around the Arc d'Triomphe (sp.) is a roundabout, and I know for a fact they are quite popular in western Belgium near the World War One frontlines (I've seen that first hand), but I don't know anything about the rest of Europe. So bear with me if you haven't got a clue what I'm on about (half the time I don't either... )

Anyway, the point of this thread was to suggest that someone with ANY coding knowledge whatsoever (i.e. someone that is not me) could look at maybe including a roundabout maybe in a roadset? Or as a variable to a crossroads occassionally.

I have absolutely no idea how it would work, and it's probably impossible since there would probably have to be a change in coding.

What I'm thinking is this:

Since TTD only has 8 different directions in which the road vehicle can face, see if this would be possible

Road Vehicle A is approaching Crossroads. Road vehicle would usually turn right. With the roundabout idea, the RV would make to turn left (i.e. facing with the back of the RV to the player) then instead of doing so would turn back to face in the direction it was originally travelling. Then it would make a usual right turn so as to be going past the second junction of the roundabout, before continuing on it's journey. I'll attempt to show you in a simple diagram.

I understand that the constraints of the RV Graphics would probably make this difficult, and also I think there would be an issue with speed. It takes time for a TTD RV to turn a corner and to have to do so twice to turn a junction is probably longer than ya average player is willing to wait.

It was just an idea for some more realism. Of course it is possible to build a roundabout over a 9x9 section, but this takes up space, and the 4x4 version looks ugly.

I know it sounds like I'm just palming the work to someone else, but I have no idea on how to code anything - hell, I struggle with the .cfg files.

Just wondered what people's views were on this.

Have a nice day,
Dave

P.S. About the images below. I was trying to describe the sequence from above in the drawing - don't laugh... tho I did.

As for the screenshot... simply shows the bus halfway through turning.

Now if this could somehow be coded to work from a different position within the road tile, then maybe a roundabout is possible.

Now watch someone tell me that it's impossible and twenty minutes work has just gone down the drain.. ho ho...

Man it gets worse. Either way check out how the path would include going around something in the middle.

With oneway roads it should be generally possible to create a big one-way roundabout .... (aka useing 9 tiles room)
