I decided to get involved with the 32bpp gfx. I'd like to know from the top gfx people here if this is the setup that I'm looking for (see image). I'll be working in 3ds max, but that's not too much of an issue. So, what's to correct to this?
Thanks!

PS Quality is a bit poor, but that's just because jpeg compression (small file tho' )
Well lighting and rendering can be done in blender (depending on how much you are relying on image textures, and what formats your software exports to)
the files are all automated in blender, and it will be easy to keep things light lighting very standardised.
the scale is such. we are thinking of making tiles 12.5x12.5meters, "or" 25x25 meters.
so modeling to scale means we can edit it later by a common factor. so keep that in mind when modeling and it will be ok.
also keep in mind we may render up to 256 pixels wide (maybe even up to 512 but i doubt that) per tile
Thanks for the feedback. I've got lighting improved on this one, also some modelling tweaks. Starting tomorrow I'll go through what's missing and take it step by step.
oh and how much 3d modelling expereinec do you have?
if you are fairly new to 3d, it may be benifical to start using Blender as the tool you learn with. if you are experienced in the software you currently use then keep using that.
blender now has Hair, and water simulation amongst its plugin-type features, so is definatly very close to production level.
i have yet to meet any real limitations in the software and i have been using it for 5 years.
Well, I'm not a beginner, but I still have to learn a lot. I actually tried to learn blender as well and maybe I'll give it another shot, but that interface seems pretty difficult to get used to.
The advantage that blender has is that I work on a Mac at the office and I have enough spare time, but on my home PC I wouldn't bother with it.
Anyhow, as I said, I'll start modelling the bits that are missing from the 32bpp kit (hopefully someone is already taking care of what needs to be done/what's done/WIPs). I've seen something on the wiki, so I'll start from there.
The shape is intereseting.
Although it is a 2x2, I don't see the necessisty of 2x2, unless you invert the north part to be a south part... The shape is merely suggested. IT should be more evident
If you are not ready to work a bit for your ideas, it means they don't count much for you.
OpenTTD and Realism? Well... Here are a few thoughs on the matter. He he he he

Music from the Bloody Time Zones
Shapes:
It would be great if banks come in various sizes (tall, thickness). Air condition stuff outside some windows would be great, too.
Add a transmitter dish and ventilation machinery on the roof.
Main door is WAY too large. Is it a truck garage enterance?
Texturing - Take a look at dmh_mac's park, and:
Make the concrete more shiny
Add a tree or two
I agree with you about modelling in Max. Trouble is you'll never get the angle or lighting or textures to look correct.
Examples are attached below. Last is the model made and rendered in 3DSMax, Second is the model exported (minus Tree) to a .dxf and then imported into Blender. Yes it's an arse trying to figure out the textures and stuff, but once i used the same textures as dmh_mac, it started to look A LOT better. First is the finished model in Blender
Export a .dxf, load up Blender with the offical lighting setup file and render how it looks. Guarrenty(sp?) it'll be completely different. But it will look like the rest of the 32Bit Graphics

If I'm not misunderstanding, you are talking about to see the ground that is hidden behind the side we see on the picture. I thought that you would be able to rotate the viewing angle when the 32bpp is ready, or am I remembering something wrong?
It should at least not be to hard to do that, because it will be based on 3d models and it takes little time to render the 3 extra angles when the model is ready. And besides it would just be so cool
